I just learned that Square Enix is now selling localized digital versions of manga series that were originally published in the company's anthology magazines. If you go to http://publications.na.square-enix.com/na/us/top , you will currently see comics such as Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater, and Nightmare Inspector. More series and volumes are slated for future release. Digital copies currently cost $6 US, compared to the $10 cost of a trade paperback.

It looks like there's some restrictions. Currently only US residents can buy from the store. And it looks like the service is only for Windows computers. Also, be sure to browse the site if you're concerned with how strict the DRM is.

This is one of several recent examples of efforts that publishers are making to release legit manga translations. We'll see if it works out.

Finally, if you're curious about what comics Square Enix has published in Japan, then be sure to read this Wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gangan_Comics
