RPGamer Hiring Call - Reviewers

CastomelCastomel MemberFull Members
edited February 2011 in Forum Rules & Announcements
Hello everyone. This posting is for any questions or comments you may have regarding the hiring process for reviewers. We are currently looking to hire 1-3 people to supplement our existing reviews team, so if this sounds like a position you'd be interested in, I'd love to see your application. The cutoff date for applications is February 2, 2011, and interviews will be held as applications are received, so don't delay!

Once again, if you have any questions or comments on this process, please use this thread to make them known; I will be checking it several times daily.

The hiring notice can be found here if you're visiting this page from the message boards and not the actual application itself.
Whoa! Slow down there, tubby! You're not on the moon yet!

Also I'm going to throw it out there, I would love to see either a PC reviewer or someone willing to review iOS titles.

I'd be interested, but the language barrier... and then we have another problem, me living in Sweden.

    Same here.

For PC games, that's not an issue. As for the language, it depends how confident you are in your writing. I'm ESL. My first reviews were wretched. I improved.

Pluses to be hired: Liking games made by companies other than Square Enix, having a gaming PC, having a 360, and being in the US.

    Not requirements, but real pluses.

I just finished and submitted my application but there was no place to attach the sample review. When I e-mail it to you guys, what do I put in the subject line? I'm not exactly sure how you guys match up applications with e-mails.

You guys should probably specify the requirements you'd expect staff to be running. There's a huge difference between a "gaming PC" (ie anything pushed upon the masses by Alienware which are, frankly, overkill) and a "pc capable of playing current games" (ie. anything built in the last couple of years with a mid-range video card).
So long & thanks for all the fish!

Oh. oh!! I have a gaming PC. And I live in the US. I mean, I know Utah barely counts as a state of the union...but it DOES count! And I like companies other than Square. I like...Ummm...who made ... Oh.... Hmmmmm... Give me a minute, I'll think of someone...

so i did the application and done up a test review thing. In my sleep deprived state i decided to try and make my word document look awesome with pictures and stuff but i think i failed horribly. Wish i could figure out how to actually use that template. Any suggestions or should I just email what I have?

Confidence: Sometimes my best friend, sometimes my worst enemy. Writing for an English site sounds both fun and frightening at the same time. Everytime I see the "hiring call", I get interested, but then I think about reviews I have read here over the years, and realize I could probably write one too - with grammatical errors and less flair. This is why I have never submitted an application.

I made it. Look up my Black Sigil review. It's... OK, I guess, since it's somewhere on the site! Also, I got much better just by doing my *cough*weekly*cough* column! You lose nothing by trying. If they think you're worth it, they'll take you. If not, they'll take you next time!

Email Castomel@rpgamer.com and if you want macstorm@rpgamer.com as well. Just put "RPGamer Review" as the subject.

I checked the list of games without reviews, and there is none for Risen. I will try to write one and submit it with my application this weekend or early next week.

I'll come in with one, unfortunately haven't been a PC gamer (with exception of Football Manager) for a few years now so unlikely to be of great help in that department. Getting the extra practice at writing them won't hurt either :D

The biggest thing to note is this. It's not that we're hurting for reviewers, it's more that we're hurting for reviewers willing to play non-mainstream/non-AAA RPGs. Keep that in mind when applying.

I'd be interested, but I don't have a whole lot of free time and, well, I've been on staff before, if only briefly. I flaked out pretty quickly. In my defense, I was going through a kind of nasty time, and I'd lost my internet a few weeks after getting hired :p

I DID just start playing Two Worlds, though! And I'm finding it a lot more fun than I was expecting. It sort of helps if you go into it with low expectations, and approach it in a similar way as Springtime for Hitler - so long as you don't take it seriously and can laugh at the super-dramatic voice acting, you might be surprised to find that you're going to enjoy it. I would love to apply but after viewing the application it seems like I may not have some of the image manipulating capabilities...

I don't play PC games either if that's what you're looking for...

But I do play a lot of RPG's on all the other systems.

I'd really love to apply, I play just about any RPG that lands in my lap regardless of platform - heck I just got an iPod Touch just to make sure I wasn't missing out. If I wasn't working on my own RPGs I would apply in a heartbeat, but I wouldn't want to be accused of bias. Well, assuming people would like my writing style and opinions to begin with :D

The application has some general questions on it that have nothing to do with reviewing. Some of the imaging/coding questions are so we can follow up and beg you to help with things that we're traditionally short-staffed on. I've never manipulated images in almost 3 years of being here, and when I was hired I had never looked at HTML code, much less altered it.
The lesson here is that dreams inevitably lead to hideous implosions.

Indeed. I'm pretty good at image editing, but I totally stink at HTML. In fact, I seem to somehow break the template every time I use it. Thankfully, people like Mac and 7th keep me straight.

I know you're teasing, but it really wouldn't be Robert. We have several people who work in the video game industry; they're just not allowed to cover their own games.

    Yes.

And to anyone afraid they might not meet the requirements, don't be afraid to apply. Really the biggest factor in the long run is time and willingness to work. Those others I listed are just pluses.

Those two posts pretty much summarized why I thought it was a joke, although considering who the offer was from, I now regret thinking that way. He was sincere.

If it wasn't for my severe issues of actually finishing games I'd apply

Got the computer to back it (Quad core 2.4 processor, 8gigs ram, 1gig video card, 1TB hard drive space) and an XBox 360.

I also know a little HTML code from when I ran my own website. Live in US, don't particular care for S-E

But yeah ... have issues completeing games :P

Does the review have to be of a game that is currently covered on the site? I'd consider writing a review for Grotesque Tactics, but it doesn't even have a page on the site.
