Eager young Republicans and Sith may now pre-order Star Wars: The Old Republic. Unfortunately, it must be ordered using a credit card, as the Force is not listed as an acceptable form of currency.

Worth noting that the EA Store... I mean.... Origins is sold out of the $150 collector's edition.

Sadly, the Force is not with our news team... I don't think any of us are Star Wars nerds, so you're left with whatever lame jokes we can manage.

Went ahead and put a pre-order down, mainly to see what half of the Guildhall graduates from like...2006...have been up to down in Austin. They're pretty proud of it from what I've heard though.

Now if only they'd give a release date. I somehow managed to only get super hyped about games that don't have release dates this year, so I was hoping that with this announcement at least one of them would let me know when to expect it.

Current evidence is pointing to a late 2011 release right now. Pre-orders get you early access which is rumored to be starting with a limited beta test in September. Also, game sucks up 30 GB of drive space.

There have been rumors that quite a lot of that is actually the voice acting.

If the game is as popular as they hope, I do not want to be trying to download anything off Origin the day the early access stuff goes live.

I feel the hate flowing through me.

Seriously, how the f**k does a digital store run out of anything?

30 gb? Not too bad, I remember the original Age of Conan install requiring 50 gigs when it came out.

The $150 Collector's Edition is the big physical CE, not the Digital Deluxe Edition that's being sold on Origin. I don't think Origin sells physical games, which is why you get directed to other stores from the EA site when you click on it. (In other words, it's not sold out, it was never even sold there.)

The Digital Deluxe is $80, which seems a bit... much for 5 digital items.

Unless I missed something, EA still sells physical copies of their games (at least for consoles) via the EA Store which I thought is what they rebranded to Origin.

I was a big fan of the other KoTOR games, and I was really looking forward to a nice next-gen installment. Instead, this thing was announced.

I realize some people like MMOs, but I think of them as RPGs in the same way that facebook games with leveling and such are. I can't see anything where other random people and power-gamers can get involved as having "immersion". Inevitably, you'll have some plot moment spoiled when another player named DarthXdildoX runs naked around your character making obscene emotes. This is not the sad part, it's just a given when online gaming and rpgs collide.

The sad part is whether this game fails OR succeeds it will just serve as evidence for KoTOR 3 never to be made.

Charging people more simply for the priviledge of downloading just the game is currently the 'in' thing in gaming full stop so not exactly surprising.
