RPGCast - Episode 256: "It's the Power of Two"

You don't need fractions, don't take square roots. Don't need no matrix math to compute this product. It's small then it's bigger then it's huge sometimes. But it might just fill your unsigned int. That's the power of two.

Sorry for the long email! Although your discussion on whether kickstarter could be used for funding rpg translation was very insightful. You guys are the best for taking the time to answer listener mail!

Going to try and do a voice mail this week if I think of a good question :-)

As much as Chris may grumble about long letters, they're actually quite welcome. We've had some GREAT convos so far this year, all from really good user feedback. Worst case scenario is you ask a silly question and we get to tease you :)

Also, a tip for everyone who sends in a voicemail: speak a little slower than you would in conversational tones. Most people get excited and rush, then their message gets garbled.

The Eternal Punishment stuff only crawled out the day 255 recorded, during the show. Polygon's only a few days late as opposed to their usual month.

I suspect the PS4 will launch like the PS3 - $499 for the basic (not using the other term) pack and FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE US DOLLARS for the big one. The difference is that the system will cost about $450 to $500 to make.

Here is a question to inspire some conversation. What is something that is a common practice in RPGs that you think should have been changed a long time ago.

I've got two as examples that really bother me.
    1. Having a dedicated battle theme. A lot of games have a lot of good dungeon themes but you end up hearing it in 15-second segments because every time you enter battle you have to hear the battle song. What you end up with are 60 hour games that feel like they only had one song on the soundtrack. The ONLY game that I know of that doesn't have this problem is Resonance of Fate.

    2. Free camera control. Unless it is a very open space like an overworld, the camera stays zoomed in too close ALL the time. So every time you turn corners, the camera swings around constantly. It is a big waste because any time something is moving, it is blurred. It is just how TVs work. Preprogrammed camera angles are vastly superior to free cameras.

What common RPG practices would you like to see changed?
