what is the mailbag? Replacement for the Q&A thread?

if so, maybe i can ask questions? I like asking things.

Have you ever sold some stuff from your gaming collection to pay for other things? Maybe new computers or heat in the winter time. Whatever you needed!

What is your favourite gaming trilogy?

Is there an RPG that could use a prequel that has never received one?

Mechs, mecha, giant robots. Last game played revolving around them?

More things should be like the Deluxe Vault Hunter Edition of Borderlands 2 and include bobbleheads as a goodie. Agree or disagree?

Notable bobbleheads in gaming other than Fallout? Can you collect them in real life?

How would you go about creating a horror RPG? Setting? Main character? Final boss?

what video game food do you wish was real?

Those are questions. Now, rants or other commentaries will come again when I'm sufficiently bored. You be warned!

    Huzzah!! Question time!

What is your favorite SNES RPG?

    Favorite Western RPG?

Would you know what to do with yourself if a Japanese developer could so closely approximate a Western style RPG that you couldn't tell the difference between the two?

Can I ask questions every week?

Favorite video game trope found in an RPG?

Why do they release games on Tuesday? I understand that everyone hates Mondays, but why Tuesdays? I mean, Tuesday's great, but Friday never hesitates! And Friday releases would give people all weekend to play their new game!

Actually now it's almost doesn't matter. Was talking to guys at Gamestop and Nintendo used to release Sundays and Thursdays however Bravely Default is on a Friday

Firstly, +1 Cure quote. Secondly, I can answer that as I used to work in a physical media store. DVDs, CDs and Games are released on Tuesdays for several reasons. Sales Figures are released on Monday. Consumers have a base day that they know when to look for new releases. If a Tuesday release is selling well, there still is time to order more before the weekend. Shipments of CDs, DVDs and street dated games usually begin to arrive in stores on Thursday. That gives the stores time to coordinate special midnight sales on Monday evening, as opposed to Sunday night going into the new week.

    Hope this helps!

That's how it works in America at least. In Europe games are almost always released on Friday. Although it is a case of games being different to other media; DVDs/Blu-Rays and music albums are pretty much always released here on Monday.

What tee shirt graphic do you think would translate into the best video game? Don't pick a graphic about an already existing video game, of course.

what is the worst weather your area will have where you will still go to work/school/other obligations?

do you miss the days of physical strategy guides being worth buying (ie- before the internet took off)?

are there any characters in games that aren't main characters or even really important ones that you think are interesting enough to have their own spin off?

(Since I'm late to the game on the forums) I have been going through the RPG Backtracks and keep hearing them talk about RPG Sanctium. What is that show? And what happened to it?

Why does RPGamer not cover indie games?

Who do you like to listen/talk to on RPG Backtrack?

What genre of games do you like to play outside of RPGs?

How often do your sinuses bother you? Do you get pain or headaches often?

what is the next cool robot based game that is coming out (Titanfall doesn't count)?

What's the longest you'll go without a shower?

What RPGs come/came out this year that are currently on your 'buy when cheaper' list?

what company have you not heard a lot from so far this year that you're expecting to announce something great?

Honestly, it's almost entirely the hub-based design that I prefer. I dealt with it for a while but once i got to Old Town the game got too annoying. There are lengthy and irritating zones in Demon's Souls, yes (5-2 comes to mind), but at least in Demon's Souls, if an area is pissing you off, you can go somewhere else without having to backtrack through a dozen other areas. If bonfire fast travel had been available from the very start, I probably would have finished Dark Souls (and probably would have liked it more, too.) If they make bonfire fast travel available in Dark Souls 2 from the get-go, maybe it'll be able to surpass Demon's Souls for me. Crossing my fingers on that one.

    Love that song btw

Nobody's gonna answer my questions? :( You're all twitter and no lolwhoops.

As for Dragon Quest, I'm dying for it to come out. In fact, I own Dragon Quest 7 on the PS1 and I got about 30 hours into it. However, I moved and hadn't picked it back up because by the time I found it again I already forgot where I was in it and wasn't eager to spend those 30 hours getting back up to like level 10. I'm missing a piece of map and I have no idea where I've already looked and going through the whole world in hopes of finding it seems like a drag. I would welcome a remake on my 3DS because I play that all the time and I heard it trimmed the fat and made it less ridiculously stretched out. I got every remake on the DS and pretty much every DQ game since 8, so it's a sure buy for me. I just wish it would have some announcement about it, even if it's a ways off or something. Nintendo should want to keep the high quality gaming flow up for this year to follow a stellar 3DS 2013. Right?

Does anyone other than me want to play more Medabots? Or maybe Little Battlers? Or the PS3 Super Robot Wars OG? Why isn't there some kind of Operation Robots group out there petitioning to get me some Robot RPGs? I would stand behind that movement.

Here's one for the old noggin: What is your favourite 50+ hour RPG? Like one that has a story that lasts 50 hours, not that you can just play for 50 hours. Can you think of one? Good. Okay, now take that game and make it 20 hours of story but still worth playing. Which game, how would you compress it, what are the reasons for removing or keeping certain parts? Leaving out any notable characters?

There have also been a number of Warhammer ones as well.

Personally I'd love to see other variety of D&D style like Arthas or such based ones and not just Forgotten Realms or Eberron.

Also single player games based of either Mutant and Masterminds or Champions and not just the MMO

All right! Exams are over, sloth week has ended, and now I'm getting back into the groove of things. So, as promised some weeks back I will talk about my SaGa experiences!

I played 3 SaGa games in my time: SaGa Frontier 1 and 2, and Romancing SaGa. I didn't much enjoy SF2, it just felt so different than the first one. I liked being given different characters and being sent out into the world to experience this and that a little differently. Gaining stats was always kinda random, so I wish that I could do things to make the chance of gaining specific stats better, like FF2's style of smacking yourself to raise HP. I really liked the robot characters in SaGa frontier. I wish they were in Romancing SaGa. Throw junk on them and watch their stats change and turn them into a walking junk-bot of death.

I remember how everyone had a bit of story to them except Lute. Lute has a final boss that I accidentally fought without doing anything else in the game and so it was basically a wasted playthrough. Is that common in the games? It's cool that you can recruit the other characters though, but I could never figure out which ones were the best because every new game I played, someone else learned the crazy super skill that destroys everything. Which is amazingly fun to see happen. I like characters just figuring out super skills like that. It would be better if having one character know the skill makes others using the same weapon more likely to learn it (they watch dude do it all the time so why not?).

Last playthrough of Romancing SaGa on PS2 I ended up going the neutral path, even though I wanted to go the bad path and even killed the dude to get his sword or whatever. I even had this dragon knight guy on my team. Not as cool as the robot, since it had really low LP and could be completely killed very easily. What's up with that, anyway? Why is there no way to replenish their LP? Surely someone in the world has learned the healing magic necessary to ease them old wounds a bit? I never even beat the game, even though I spent a load of time with it. I just kept starting new characters and screwing around for like 20 hours then stopping.

Oh, I think I'll start another game, so any suggestions for character to start with, who to recruit, what type of magic is the best, and any tip on making it through the game?

Also, I realized after typing this out that my thought organization could be better. Ah well.

    Mailbag Q:

Having been gifted a Vita, I have endured especially long episodes of my girlfriend playing Minecraft by playing around on it. I really like the screen on it. Do you have a Vita? Do you want one? Can you think of a game or series that would move a crapton of units this holiday season if it were released around then? If you were making a Vita game, in what ways would you use the Vita's features and controls? Anything special or different that you haven't seen yet?

Everytime someone doesn't like Unlimited SaGa I feel sad inside. While I do get how people can complain about how hard it is to access, it never created a too big hurdle for me. At first sure, I tried for an hour to open the first treasure chest, but when I finally managed to open it, it felt rewarding. And once you figured out something, anytime you have to do it in the future, you already know how. I also played through the game without even knowing about the R3 button. Hearing about it later on (I think it was mentioned in the booklet as some super hint somewhere), made the game significantly easier, though!
But anyway, that's not the reason why I think the game is great and why is should get more love. It's more the overall feeling this game gives. This... incredible sense of exploration and stage clearing. Every level is some kind of large challenge with its own little story. You won't see much visually, but it plays a lot with your imagination by describing things. And the stages feel so alive because NPCs also will have a pre-set movement pattern depending on turn. They will not just randomly walk but do their own thing. The time limit in each stage forces you to not explore everything (and even without time limit your resources wouldn't be enough), so even after clearing a stage, the whole region/dungeons feels like something huge and still vastly unexplored.
The exploration feeling in this game is the highest of the whole series.

If people don't like this game, I always think that they don't... understand or feel this exploration feeling. And that makes me sad. Because I think it should be something everyone should feel at least once.

By the way, I thought the "more complex controls than necessary" somehow added to the Pen & Paper feeling. I mean in P&P everything is... pretty slow (compared to videogame RPG). You first have to think what to do, say it, roll it out, react on possible negative results. It can really take a while to open a trapped and locked treasure chest in P&P. And the complex controls in USG somehow emulate that. If I just had to press "A" and then it will automatically try to unlock or disarm the treasure chest, it just wouldn't feel the same.

Y'know what, I'm going to go with the insane choice and say Macho Women with Guns. Never played it, only heard about it, but it sounds frickin' insane (in a good way). Though now that I think about it, it's not that far removed from the Metal Max games when it comes to over-the-top sci-fi madness.

I honestly would like to see a lot of table top games as video games. Ever since I started watching the Shut Up And Sit Down Show, I realized how many board games there are that would be perfect as video games. And with the video game advantage of being able to provide unlimited "tiles" rather than being limited by how much fits into a box, those games could be expanded easily.

There aren't actually many board games turned into video games (only the most popular ones like Settlers of Catan), I wonder why.
