The 2016 Completed Games List

ClixClix ListmasterFull Members
edited January 1 in Miscellaneous Gaming
Welcome to the first full year with me as the listmaster. This will mark our 8th year doing this. Numbers were low last year, so let's all do better. Except the two who do not need to do better. You know who you are.

Previous annual lists:
2008
2009
2010
2011
2012
2013
2014
2015

The rules for the list are simple, but very important. All games completed in the calendar year of 2016 can be counted for inclusion. Completed-in-2016 is the sole rule. Whatever you want to count as an individual title is up to you. It is your list. I am merely here to help leave a lasting legacy, in case you ever want to remind yourself when you beat a certain game. Please, use this thread to discuss the games you complete with each other, whether said game is a gem or a turd.

Note: In light of above language, this does in fact mean that MMOs now count. If you are for some reason lying about completing an MMO on an online forum, that's your problem, not mine. We do this for fun. I think.

Updates to the list will be made roughly three times a day if not more so (morning, afternoon, evening)--essentially anytime I visit RPGamer, and I do that an uncomfortably large number of times a day. If you do not see your game added to your list within 24 hours, then please PM me or raise a hand--it is possible, but unlikely, that I have skipped over your post. I will announce any "long-term" absences ahead of time. Also, due to the rapid nature of updates, staff will no longer be responsible for maintaining a separate list in the second post of the thread. Unless we see a 1000% increase in activity here, I literally go days without updates to make because half of the regulars are staff members. If any staff member wishes to still edit their list, then you have the ability to edit this post--I do not mind.

For personal list customization, please highlight or point out any special notes about a playthrough. For example, you may use brackets or bold/italics to point out game difficulty, hours to completion, completion percentage, et al. I will be happy to include this on your list, but I can only do so if it is fairly obvious in the post. While I do tend to read most posts thoroughly, a remark on game difficulty buried in the middle of the third paragraph (of seven) will most likely slip through the cracks. If you are tracking total game hours, I can also include that statistic next to the number of completed games listed next to the your name--just ask for this service in your first post in this thread, and I will tract it from there.

Finally, because I am a dirty, fat liar, there is actually a second rule. You must include the system that the game was included on. If not, I will count it as "????", and it will be your responsibility to rectify this, not mine.

Games will be listed in the following order (in chronological order; i.e. NES, SNES, N64, etc.):

Systems:
Nintendo Family
Sega Family
PlayStation Family
Xbox Family
PC
Arcade
Other

Handhelds:
Nintendo Family
Game Gear
PlayStation Family
Mobile Platforms (e.g. iPhone)

For digital store games, please list them on the platform you physically beat the game on, but mention that the game came from a specific digital service. For example, if you use PSN to download Final Fantasy VII and beat it on a PSVita, then please list the game as Final Fantasy VII (PSVita) - via PSN. This is also welcome for Steam and other PC-based digital services. I will by no means stress this; this is just a request from yours truly for the sake of formalities.

    Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth - PSP

Probably one of a few games that really rate my favorite games of all time. Been doing a lot of overnights at work and when you have mostly 5 hours of nothing to do this helps pass the time. The game still even stands up to this day

I've been meaning to play VP for a while. I bought the PSP off of a staff member ages ago, but I just never got around to it. Maybe that should be one of the handheld titles that I tackle this year. See, the anxiety comes from my design to pull off the perfect ending, which I have read is near-impossible to stumble upon even if you know it exists. I primarily play handhelds on breaks at work, and I wouldn't be able to pull up an FAQ due to lack of smart phone and poor connection on the 22nd floor. That said, I've been making my way through Wild Arms 2 via guide by reading a section or two the night before and making memos on my phone for any puzzles or directions. I am probably just being way too paranoid about perfecting VP, really.

Would you be taking care of the staff list as well (or merging them into the main list)? edit - oh wait, you did mention it, carry on!

Anyway first game I finished turns out to be a route on Norn9: Var Commons (Vita). Not too bad though the actual overarching story is a little odd what the apparent "main" character disappearing for most of it, imagine it clears up a bit after finishing more routes but not too sure I can be bothered playing many; Sweet Fuse still my favourite otome game :P

Also to get the most enjoyment from the post game dungeon you have to play it on hard. The official Strategy guide for Lenneth states to play the game once on Easy (as a few of the dungeons only show up in that versions) and then do it on hard once you get a handle on the systems

If you loved Sweet Fuse then you really need to try Code Realize. It's really well written, a lot more series, but offers a lot to otome fans. I was thinking of starting Norn9 myself tonight!

Man, I beat at game at 5pm on New Year's Day and I'm 3rd?!

Assassin's Creed Unity (PS4). I can't imagine a setting better than this. Paris was wonderful, the French Revolution was the perfect backdrop, and I liked that Ubisoft put aside the Assassin v Templar plotline to make it a love story. This is my 6th AC and the last I'll play in a long time. I'm pooped on the mechanics, and it's an excellent entry to stop at for a while. Sorry to those who played it near launch.
The lesson here is that dreams inevitably lead to hideous implosions.

Oh good, so they did finally fix it. I just got a PS4, so it's on the horizon for me. I love the series, but all the horror stories scared me about Unity. Based on your experience with other core-entries, how buggy is Unity once fully patched? Pretty good with an occasional hiccup, or it still Brotherhood or III level of glitchy?

I'd say pretty good with an occasional hiccup. The worst glitch I saw was later in the game when you're fighting more enemies at once, the game's autotracking and general ability to know when combat had ended or not could get slippery. It never crashed, I had to restart it once when I got stuck in the environment, and there were some graphics issues a few times but they only lasted for seconds. Otherwise it was clean.
The lesson here is that dreams inevitably lead to hideous implosions.

Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana (PS2) is my first game of the year. Other than the really weird difficulty spike at the end with the final boss, I enjoyed this one! It doesn't make me want to grab the sequel out of my backlog right away, but I thought the characters were cute and I liked how bittersweet the ending was.

    Stella Glow (3DS)

I was hoping to make it my last game beaten for 2015, but it ended up being my first game for 2016. Oh well. The last boss was a fun challenge, though I did lose Mordimort (I didn't realize until after I finished that I didn't have to take her along for the very last part of the fight). It kept me on my toes even when I used Lissette's Conduction songs as often as I could.

This game is an excellent send off for Imageepoch, though it's still a shame that its gone. Overall, it was kind of a hit-or-miss developer, but I really enjoyed the Luminous Arc series, Arc Rise Fantasia, Sands of Destruction, and now Stella Glow. It is, in many ways, the best Luminous Arc game. Sure, it's even less subtle about the fanservice than either of the three LA games, but it also has the best story out of the four (not that it's that much of an accomplishment, admittedly) many fun and engaging characters, and well-balanced battles. The writing/localization is fantastic, including the voice-acting though this being an Atlus USA-published game, that's to be expected. Heck, some of that dumb fanservice was even genuinely funny. The music is excellent, too! I really hope an original soundtrack gets released for it.

There is a "true ending" that can be unlocked during a New Game+ , but I'll probably save that for some point later in the year. I've got two Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games to try and finish between now and late February, then Fire Emblem Fates (all available campaigns) and possibly Bravely Second, if that gets released before I finish FEF. I wonder if the Japanese version of "Hikari no Metamorphosis" is unlocked by getting that ending? The English version is great, but pre-release stuff by Atlus USA stated that both language versions would be in this game.

On some final, highly spoilerific notes:
I have seen the "It was Earth All Along!" trope used a number of time in video games, but I rather like how subtle Stella Glow is about it. If not for Dr. Veronica's profile, the time of the "Technolomies" could have been a generic Advanced Magictech Fantasy World.

I'm pretty sure Eve is voiced by Cassandra Lee Morris, and possibly Marie as well. If I'm right 1) she can sound at least a little different from Edea and 2) man, she sounds chilling doing an evil character.
    Bravely second...
    The courage to try again...

Completed Emily Is Away (PC, via Steam) and it is basically "FriendZone: The Game." Really did transport me back to the early 2000s, and it's an interesting conversation on how relationships change and transform. You can see my story unfold (minus my ending) here, as I tweeted the whole experience.

Tales of Xillia (PS3): This has been sitting on my PS3 for ages so I thought I'd finally get around to it. Pretty decent but It's extremely obvious from the last third or so of the game how very rushed it was.

Yo-Kai Watch (3DS) started out fast and fun. As others had warned me, it drags later on as the flaws become a bigger nuisance and the strengths take a back seat. I liked it more at first because it directly fixed so many of the issues I have with Pokemon. Then it sunk in a quagmire of its own problems before, fortunately, ending rather quickly. It would have been a rougher experience if it was longer.

    Carpe Diem (PC)

A very short kinetic novel (7 minutes). The overall story is not really interesting until the very end, when it delivers a shock ending that makes for it. There are tons of hints about it, but if you aren't looking for it you wont see it coming.

There is almost no interaction in this game, since its a kinetic novel. You get a single choice near the beginning. There is only a limited amount of artwork, and I would have hoped for more character art changes. A decent first outing, hopefully the dev uses this as practice for a more fully fleshed out visual novel in the future.

After watching the Danganronpa anime I felt like playing an investigate game (preferably one I hadn't done before). I enjoyed Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments last year so I took advantage of the Steam sale to pick up and play through its precedessor, The Testament of Sherlock Holmes (PC). Though I liked the way Crimes and Punishments did the episodic set of cases (and the way it had multiple endings for each of the cases), having just the single interconnected storyline here meant it wasn't just a case of more of the same, even if the ending was a litttle bit ehh. There's supposed to new a new one in the developer's series (Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter) out this spring so likely going to pick that up.

Yeah, the Frogwares' Sherlock Holmes games are an interesting beast. They've got a bunch of them going back quite a ways before Testament, but other than maybe Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper (which I haven't played yet), I don't know if I'd recommend going back further than Testament. They've gotten a lot better with each new game at making it feel like more of a real point&click game, and less of a hidden object game with some obtuse minigames between them. I recently played the oldest one they made I believe (Sherlock Holmes and the Persian Carpet), and it was rather painful.

Finished a run of Norn9: Var Commons (Vita) and romanced Heishi. I really liked it even if the plot was a bit confusing. Definitely going to do another run through it and see if romancing some of the other dudes gives me a bit more insight.

Just finished Dying Light (XBONE), and while I enjoyed the game quite a bit overall, the ending left a bitter taste in my mouth. I thought that developers had learned that a final boss should not be a QTE, but apparently not. Also, the pixel perfect requirements of some of the traversal towards the end did not play to the strengths of the game. Basically, don't change the gameplay for the last hour of the game, when I have been building up a completely different set of skills to that point. Also, don't make dream sequences a failable event... that really breaks the flow of the story you are trying to tell. Despite those complaints, I did really enjoy engaging with the world and the game felt really good at times. Maybe a touch too long, but I did complete every sidequest (didn't touch the challenges, though). Now to dig in to Mana Khemia... and maybe a bit of MGSV as well.

Got round to finishing off World End Economica episode.02 (PC) (around 8 hours overall) last night. As with the first episode it's hard to recommend to people who aren't already fans of economics/stock trading or Isuna Hasekura prior work (Spice and Wolf), but interesting enough even if I still know naff aff about the economics stuff in the background. At least ends on a slightly less downcast note than the first episode.

    Defy Gravity(PC)

Well it did start as a fun little game that you play with gravity, but in the end it have become too much about finding a specific pattern and you need a lot of luck, especially in the level before the final one. I won't do the hard mode where you have only the gravity well that attract.

I am glad for sure that I did get it for only 25 cents, I don't recommend it for any higher price.

Remember Me (PS3) -- Really enjoyed this one, though it definitely had some awkward gameplay moments. Story was great, though it fell apart somewhat at the end. Still, it was the kind of game I needed, since I was feeling a little RPGed-out. Now back to RPGs!

Whew, my first game finished for 2016 is also my GOTY for 2015: The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel (PS3)

If you love classically styled RPGs, do yourself a favor and play this game. It's fantastic.

Final playtime was over 90 hours.

    Shining Force 2 (X360)

Perhaps I am just burned out after having played three Shining Force games over the last several months, but I really did not enjoy this game.

On one hand, the characters were a lot more likable than the first Shining Force game, as they spent a lot more time developing the characters. On the other hand, the plot itself is completely unmemorable.

But its the gameplay where this game really drags. I'm not particularly a fan of SRPGs in general, but this game does seem like a fairly competent early-era SRPG. The problem is that the battles last too long, and there are random difficulty spikes at a few points mid-game. I spent a little shy of 29 hours before I finished the game, but it felt like 200 hours. I just don't find 30-60 minutes for one battle as fun, especially when I have to replay a battle a few times in order to actually finish it. And maybe its just me, but the floaty camera during non-battle movement really gave me a headache.

I can see why people have fond memories of this game, but for me coming to it in 2016- it just doesn't hold up and I did not have fun with it. It is the weakest of the three Shining Force game I have played.

And, with that I am finished with my trek through the RPGs from the Ultimate Genesis Collection that people still talk about. In all honesty, few of them really hold up, and I'm glad that I had a SNES rather than a Genesis when I was younger.
