Question of the Week:
Should MMOs have numerical scores?

I'm rapidly reaching the point where assigning a numerical score to anything is a brown rhombus on the Scott scale, so assigning a score at a fixed point in time to a game that evolves as rapidly as an MMO does is a fool's errand.

In the podcast you said that you "want" a real life bat. Maybe you weren't serious? I hope you didn't mean it.

Bats are cute, but they make terrible pets.

    * Wild bats have about a 25 year lifespan; pet bats generally die within one year.

    * Even professional zoos have problems with the mortality rate of captive bats.

    * Bats are social animals; they live in colonies in the wild. Flying fox families stay together for life. Social animals are miserable when kept by themselves as a pet, or when they are separated from their children. Even owning two or three social animals isn't the same as how they are meant to live, in a large group.

    * The average human home does not have the space or facilities to allow a bat to fly around, eat bugs in midair, and generally enjoy itself.

    * Bats are notorious for infecting humans with zoonotic diseases, including rabies.

The exotic pet trade for bats can only be described as cruel, immoral, and a swindle. Most "pet bat" sellers do not inform their customers that the pet they just paid thousands of dollars for will likely die within a year.

Here are some links about the issue:

All of that is why I don't have a pet bat. I was really into the idea as a kid, but as I grew older realized that it wasn't going to happen. Sadpants.

At least you can still tame bats in WoW. Course, I don't know who on the cast runs Hunter. (I Do. Hunter Loot FTW)

I've always had a hunter alt, on every server/faction I've played, but never a hunter main.

I forgot. Do you guys man Alliance or Horde? I might use my legion boost to make a char on your server.

World of Warcraft also has a bat mount! ...which costs $25 on the in-game shop. :)

You can also get a companion pet bat ("Tirisfal batling", from Argent Tournament daily quests in Icecrown or bought off the auction house) and make it fight other pets.

Edit: Yes, MMOs need a numerical score, for the same reason that Overwatch needs a numerical score on websites that review it. The score reflects whether the game is any fun.

Also, you can "beat" an MMO by finishing its storyline and raid content for the current expansion. I would say you "beat" World of Warcraft Warlords of Draenor if you did all the Draenor quests, dungeons, and raids (even if only in Looking for Raid mode). It's nowhere near 100% completion, of course.
