    I think the danger of loot boxes is when developers start tweaking the balance of the game. For instance, if the develop sees they can slow down the pace of progress, and it shows a 25% increase in loot box profit. This is a scenario that would potentially hurt the player even if they don't buy loot boxes, and what some have accused shadow of Morodor and nba 2k18 of doing. To what extent I do not know. You could go further and say even diablo 3 originally scaled their loot in this manner, even if it wasn't tied to a specific box mechanic.

    I don't look forward to a day when an Rpg I really want slows leveling down to the point where I felt I needed an item or bonus from a loot box, if it ever comes to that.

    I'm fine with all loot boxes in free-to-play games. I'm fine with loot boxes in paid games IF they only contain cosmetic items that don't affect gameplay. I believe Heroes of the Storm and Overwatch loot boxes are like this.

    Gameplay-altering lootboxes in paid games need to die in a fire.

    There are already tons of free-to-play and budget-priced RPGs that deliberately slow down progress, yet have in-app purchases to speed up progress. Mostly on mobile systems. It can be argued that amiibos speed up progress in certain Nintendo games.

    I recently played two 3DS Kemco RPGs (Chronus Arc and Justice Chronicles) that were originally paid games with in-app purchases. Their 3DS versions do not have in-game purchases; instead, the game's default price is slightly higher, and the games have been tweaked so that formerly premium perks can be obtained through rote grinding. Is this the future of budget-priced RPGs in general...?
