RPGCast - Episode 454: "In Memorium: Chris's Gallbladder"

RPG Cast is back, if a little bit lighter. See what one plays when they have three weeks without work. See what happens when THQ becomes THQ again. See what happens when FFXV is on Windows. See what happens when Goofy is turned into a Cthulian horror. Actually don't see that one; you can't unsee it.

You can find the show notes here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hLXOun1ZxUP6E_vRgsLTdrSzy7q-h4iCHJt3EDYuKRs/edit?usp=sharing

RPGCast streams live on Saturday at Noon Eastern / 9 AM Pacific.

I've wanted to get to the end of Persona 3 but the mood of the game is so depressing that I can never see it through.

Regarding DQ Builders 2, it was announced as PS4/Switch last summer but they haven't said anything about localization yet.

Awww, no GOY show? Well, I guess it is nearly March, but I was looking forward to arguing with Kelley (well, probably everyone) about the merits of Persona 5. Oh well, I'm sure I'll have something else for everyone to disagree with sooner or later :)

QotW: Can I go with Paradox Grand Strategy games (in general) as a choice? Love all those games, but don't think I've ever finished one and if I'm being honest with myself, I probably never will.

FYI the "Wheels game" of 2017 would have been Has-Been Heroes had there been a GOY show.

I should have given it a go when it was on psn sale this week but I chickened out. It was the steam reviews of the game that intrigued me. For every review calling it the worst game they’ve played, there was one with a huge playime saying it’s brilliant. Seemed like a love it or hate it game if I ever saw one.

That seems to be the case with any roguelike-ish game, especially so for this one as it takes a bit to learn / unlock stuff. It also improved with patches, which is a shame as many complaints I saw at release are no longer and issue. Highly recommend anyone who like roguey games to give it a go.

The original version of Radiant Historia did not have any permanently missable sidequests or unique items.

The one, tiny, unimportant, does-not-officially-count-toward-100%-completion aspect of the game that was technically "missable" was
    Spoiler:
an optional boss fight that wasn't challenging and gave no significant loot. The battle can't be triggered after the sewer-escort section is done.

I sincerely doubt that any of this has changed for the remake.

QOTW: Although I finished the Dragon Quest 9 main story, I kind of want to play through its gigantic postgame story. The problem is, some DQ9 postgame quests are DLC only and therefore virtually impossible to obtain today.

This dilemma saps my will to put in the required time to grind DQ9 class levels. Maybe I'll just wait and hope for a DQ9 remake.

I've also left Shadow Madness (a PSX RPG) unfinished because my free time has been split between World of Warcraft, Switch games, PS4 games, and 3DS games. Shadow Madness was dated but had a certain homegrown charm; maybe I'll get back to it in 2018.

I always wanted to finish Ys I and II. I did eventually (10 years later), but it wasn't until I noticed that I was not actually equipping weapons and armor when I first played it. I just assumed that as soon as the items entered by inventory, they were automatically equipped. So I spent hours grinding on weak enemies with the starter equipment, only to give up and drop the game due to frustration. The menu system was not very intuitive to me 10+ years ago, and I never bothered to read any FAQs or strategy guides for it until much later.

I remember I had that problem with the original Final Fantasy. Since each character had their own inventory, I assumed that having the item in the inventory meant it was equipped.

For me, it would have to be Trails of Cold Steel, I guess. I like the game, but for some reason I never quite feel like getting around to it. I think it's because of the somewhat lengthy chapter structure that makes me feel like I want to take on a chapter at once. So I tend to not want to play if I don't have a good chunk of time to devote to it.
