Eh. Just thought I'd make a wow thread for the rpgamers out there who play wow. The purpose of this thread is to discuss anything WoW related. Questions, concerns, gripes, accomplishments, anything. Non-warcrackers welcome as well.

Anyhoo, to get started, I've got a 49th lv troll rogue, 60th lv human paladin, ?and a 25th lv human warrior, all on shadowsong server, non pvp.

Thinking about paying my bill and getting the game reactivated. I've had about a month vacation from it, due to unemployment and having to cancel it. I'd like to start over on a pvp server, Burning legion. I did some research online, seems that server has a good balance of alliance/horde. Probably gonna go mage. It's going to suck starting from scratch, but, I want to play the game the way I think the creators intended.

Post edited to update my class progression, plus I deleted my hunter and mage, and started warrior over as a human, heh.

With the advent of Battlegrounds, PvP servers seem like kind of a waste. Since it's virtually impossible to get PvP rewards outside of Battlegrounds, any open-field PvP is likely to just be ganking until you get a lot closer to end-game. I really like Dethecus, and really enjoyed the feel of a PvP server pre-BGs, and I like most of the players I end up fighting with and against in BGs, but I just don't really see the point of it being a PvP server anymore.

I haven't had any experience with bg since my accounts been cancelled for a month. Is it as detrimental to the game as everyone says it is? Perhaps Blizz would remove it if there was enough customer dissatisfaction heard.

Remove it... due to people on the fora... ? Tee hee. Hee.

Yeah, no. The Battlegrounds themselves are just fine, and there are more improvements coming soon. I've seen very few complaints from anyone with the slightest understanding of how the honor system works. It's the thing to hit up for meaningful, team-based PvP.

Pretty much what Rico said. ?I play a dwarven hunter (34) on Alzagor and while there is still fun to be had, most of the PvP experiences I've had are negative, where I had 60's ganking me left and right. ?I joined a large group of people (wouldn't call it a raid, we never got organized enough =P) doing some PvP action in Hillsbrad the other night, but that was my first positive experience with it. BGs has forced most of the players wanting the PvP rewards to camp out in them, so it has rendered a lot PvP action in normal areas a lot less important.

This isn't to say that the Battlegrounds aren't awesome however. ?I honestly haven't had personal experience with them, but from what I've heard and researched, they do seem quite fun. I recommend that you play on a PvP server only if you think it would be fun to have to keep an eye out for members of the opposite faction and if you enjoy dueling a lot.

I picked this game up a few days ago, and I'm level 30 now. However, the game is absolutely driving me insane, mainly because I'm one of the guys who suffer from the fatal 132 error. I hope they fix it in the next patch, because as it is now, the beta worked better than retail.

Yeah, I've been wasting away at this game too. Currently my best character is a level 55 Night Elf Huntress. Alt-wise I've got a 42 Troll Rogue and a 21 Night Elf Druid. I haven't really gotten into any PvP as of yet, but I'll probably end up doing the whole Alterac Valley thing so I can get that amazing Ice Spear or whatever the hell its called with the insane stats. Right now I'm mostly pushing to get my Huntress to 60 so I can finally join all my RL friends who've been 60 since like March on all this endgame stuff.

Hey solon, have you tried checking out www.worldofwarcraft.com?
Check the forums there on how to fix that horrible horrible error. I had it too, it really sucked. However, it was my ram. I went to frys electronics and had it checked out, and it wouldn't complete the scan. They replaced my ram, and I haven't seen that error since.

Different people have different solutions, but I suggest having your ram checked.

I wouldn't complain before checking up on things. I have tried it all. I have read every thread, talked to blizzard several times. There's nothing wrong with my hardware. Nothing. The game worked perfectly before, it's this patch that screwed it up.

Did you try updating all your drivers? You could also try uninstalling the game, make sure to delete the whole WoW folder and re-install? Maybe there's a corrputed file? Do you have 1024 RAM?

Anyways, 60 NE Rogue here. I started a Mage, lvl 20. Still playing the game 2-3 hours a day.

Dang Solon, sorry to hear that. When I had that error, it was becoming a deal breaker for me. I was ready to cancel the game, take it back, and forget mmos completely. Fortunately, the last thing I tried worked.

Ironically, once the game started working properly, I got a different error, lol. But then I downloaded this repair tool, and that error dissapeared too.

Yeah, if you don't want random player-killing, just use one of the very numerous PvE (Normal) servers. About the only thing to watch out for is that if you heal or buff a player of your own faction who has flagged himself for PvP you'll also be flagged, but other than that, there's no non-consensual PvP on that ruleset. The Battlegrounds are great for consensual PvP, but there's also not much point to doing that before 60 due to the way the honor system works.

One thing I recommend is that since it only takes a few hours to get to level 10 or 20 that you try out a lot of classes and see what you like and dislike. For instance, I loved playing Thief/Assassin in Ragnarok Online, but can't stand Rogue in WoW (but love Mage, which is pretty similar). I also got really bored with Shaman, which is supposed to be the finished hybrid, but took Druid to 60. I also recommend you don't pay much attention to the WoW fora. There's some good information in there, but the vocal minority concept is very much in place there, and it can damage your enjoyment of the game or of certain classes.

Hey Rico, is there a tree in the Druid class that allows you to become a nuker, or close to one? I've always liked playing elven mages in dnd, but wow doesn't allow NE mages. I always ask this question in game but never get a clear answer.

Kind of. The Balance tree does have some enhancements to nuking: Reduced casting time on Wrath, improved Moonfire crit chance, and an added stun proc to Starfire. There's also a talent to boost range and one to lower mana costs. The top talent in the tree is a once-a-minute AoE with a slow effect.

I've been meaning to mess around with it some more on a test server now that I have some equipment from Dire Maul, but my guess is that it works okay. What worries me is that Starfire is the only real "efficient" nuke of the bunch, but has a 3.5s cast time. Both Wrath and Moonfire drain a lot of mana, although chaining Improved Wrath isn't bad DPS, and its low damage per shot reduces the chances it'll break Entangling Roots. You also don't get the free water Mages do, and while Druid has a lot of good escape options, they don't seem particularly suited to a cast-happy build.

The thing is, Mages are plentiful, and a Druid's ability to sub for them isn't that great. That's one of the complaints of the community: Not only is Druid's ability to sub for Mage and Rogue hurt by the abundance of those classes, but a Druid's nuking and Cat form are much worse, relatively, than a Druid's tanking and healing.

On the bright side, if you put 30 or fewer points in Balance but skip Hurricane, you can put 21 in Restoration and get Nature's Swiftness, and since you'll already be gearing a lot of Int, you can be effective as both a healer and a nuker without having to deal with the hassle of feral gearsets. You can also put 20 in Balance for some pretty good improvements and then 31 in Restoration to get Innervate, which will give you a lot more mana to play with. That gets to another community complaint: While a full Balance Druid does more damage in a smaller period of time, over the long run a Restoration Druid can do more damage.

So, uh, in short: A Druid has nukes, but grouping as a nuker might be tricky.

Mmm, World of Warcraft. I'm a proud member of a really cool little guild on Gorgonnash, 51 NE warrior. Had a 41 gnome warlock and some horde alts that have all kind of faded, lately.

I do love all the crafting systems in this game, and all the clever naming references. Everyone in Un'Goro crater rules. "Dodanga doesn't like smoke!"

Oh so regardless of being flagged for PvP on an PvE server, they still have to consent with you before they battle you?

I just got this game today so I don't want to get PK'ed on my way to doing my first quests.
  • RicoRico Member Full Members

Here's how the system works on a PvE server:
You start out unflagged for PvP. While unflagged, no opposite-faction character can touch you with anything. If you flag yourself for PvP (/flag? /pvp? I don' know), then you can be beaten on by opposite-faction characters in any zone. If you're flagged and want to unflag, you redo the command, and then after five minutes of not engaging in any PvP combat, you'll be unflagged.

You're automatically flagged if you attack another player, an opposite-faction NPC, if you heal or buff a same-faction flagged player, or if you start certain quests (unsure which ones, but there're a few out there). I think you're able to /duel opposite-faction players without being flagged, but I'm not sure; that's a little too situational, and I play on a PvP server. ;P
  • PlugPlug Member Full Members
    edited July 2005
The command is /pvp to throw up the flag. And you can no longer duel players of opposing factions since they removed that capability on a relatively recent patch. From what I understand, people were spam duel-requesting while surrounding individual players with an entire group of people until they accidentally hit 'accept duel' instead of decline (which, if ten people are constantly challenging you would happen eventually) and then promptly jumping them.

Edit: Apologies, I was mistaken. You can still in fact duel players of the opposing faction, but your flag will no longer be activated when doing so. Unless of course one of the two players is already flagged and the other strikes him/her. My bad.

awesome. Played the game last night for about 10 mins ago and I'm pretty much sold on WoW. I decided that I'm gonna switch over from Guild Wars to this game since this game doesn't have the rampant issues GW does (no random boots yay). I notice the difference between playing on free servers and paid for, maintained servers and I much prefer the paid servers.
