George had followed the golem guard, and he laughed as he watched the kids get defeated with ease. Mess with me and you will get burned. Program that into your thick, metal heads. George was about to return to loitering when Cyrano made his appearance. A free splicing. Sounds fun. "I'll take you up on your offer. I've signed up to be allied with Sheol, and I'm looking for something that'd be good for slicing up punks like those kids. I haven't read up on all the options. Since your a skilled artisan, I trust your judgment. You can even surprise me." George didn't sound too roostery or rude (when compared to his usual self). George passed high school with good grades for a reason. When necessary, George could kiss ***.

Kiyoshi, though usually a calm and collected fellow, had spent most of his stay in Carista practically biting his nails. Alcohol, gambling, and now violence. At least he had been able to pass the time playing a friendly, no risk game of roulette. He looked up from the table to stare at George with pity, "Poor boy, he's so lost. If only I could show him the right path. At least Nick and Desoto were able to help him out, in the future I'll have to keep him out of more trouble, though. Kiyoshi turned his attention back to the roulette table, a worried expression on his face.

Suddenly someone in the room addressed a group of humans, Kiyoshi turned around and saw an odd man standing over his friends. He turned away from the table and walked towards the strange newcomer. As the man bowed, Kiyoshi looked flustered, no one had ever bowed that low to him before. He did what he could though, he quickly dropped to his knees and managed to dip his head lower than the mans. He heard Cyrano's offer and sighed. He rose to his feet, "Thank you for the offer, Mr. Cyrano, but I'll be remaining human. By the way, my name is Kimura Kiyoshi." Kiyoshi smiled pleasantly at the man and performed another short bow.

Cyrano shook Kiyoshi's hand, his grip was rather firm. "Ah well.. good to have a control group I ssssupposssse." He turned to George.

"All right then... pleassse sssstep into my officcccce" Cyrano said as he led George out of the casino.

Nick followed, simply to make sure there was no trouble. He had no problem with George splicing, he simply wanted to make sure everything went well. As Cyrano had mentioned, splicing on humans was new and the results were an unknown.

"Hmmm." Cyrano said as he looked over George with a scope that showed him the boys karma rating. "Not too much I can do with a rating of only -5.. good thing isss that'sss your natural number, meaning there'll be no feeling of woozinesss that comesss from having karma drained." He reached into a nearby suitcase for a phial of liquid. "Here we are..Remember, if you want more optionssss you need to get karmaticssss, don't worry, I'm sure you'll develop sssome friends in the busssinesss.. Assss I can tell a frequent cussstomer when I meet them. kukukuku." He took out a needle and inserted the phial into place. "Let'sss do it." Cyrano said simply as he held out Georges arm and inserted the needle into the ulnar vein.

Suddenly, a rush of feelings occurred within George's body, happiness, panic, anxiety, coldness, hotness, all rushed through the boy as the chemical took effect. Cyrano provided George with a nearby box to sit on so that he did not fall down and crack his skull on the hard ground.

Within a few minutes, George's chemically induced altered state of mind would subside. His skin was now a darker shade of gray, and he felt a dryness in his throat. "Good newsss bad newsss." Cyrano said. "Good newsss the procedure went off without a hitch. Bad newsss, that ssspeed you exhibited earlier might be lossst in thisss form.. good newss.. no teenage hosssfa's knife should be able to give you any trouble, golem." Cyrano announced as he revealed that George was now a golem.

Nick was surprised as well that the procedure had gone well. George looked fairly close to his original self.

Mr. Carter got back from Hold just in time to see George become a golem. "I don't suppose you can turn me into a Crevidexus?" he asked.
Wait. Did I spell that right?

"But of courssse" Cyrano answered Carter's call as he performed a similar procedure on him. After the few moments of high, Carter's vision cleared and Cyrano, George, and Nick returned to his vision. Cyrano looked slightly disappointed.

"Ssssss... Oh well.. can't alwayssss be too ssssucesssful." He said as he held up a hand-mirror to Carter. Instead of the deer head that was signature of normal cervidexae, Carter had merely grown a long, shaggy beard, his hair color had changed to brown, and two small horns had appeared. "Your antlersssss should grow with time." Cyrano said. "Remember, if ever in need of a more interessssting, and possssibly illegal ssssplice job. The sssserpent issss tied around every tree." Cyrano pulled back some skin and produced several business cards. The cards had a small print of a snake on them and numbers which looked foreign. Unfortunately, the common-tongue did not translate numerals. Before Cyrano could help them however, he disappeared into the back alleyways. "kukukuku.." his laugh rang.

Nick looked down at George and Carter, helping them up and bringing them back in the casino to meet up with the others.

Desoto looked surprised at his two teammates new appearances. He thought it was interesting and would probably splice as well once he had his karma adjusted.

"Pointless." Nick answered. "A cervidexus' beard is like the equivalent to a persons manhood.." He put his answer bluntly. "That, plus it grows back within a couple of hours."

"Whoa!" Judy took a step back when she saw the two new splicers. "I didn't expect it to be done so quickly. How did it feel?"

"It was better than when I died," remarked George. He didn't care to elaborate about his death. Truth be told, the splicing was far better than he ever imagined. When Nick first described the process, it sounded intriguing, but the real experience far outweighed any description. "Hey, demon, can you get multiple splices? I could get addicted to this. Though, I'll miss running. There is another possible addiction to be had. Nurse, now that I'm part rock, how about I rip you a new hole? I promise I'll be gentle." The youth approached Judy and laid down his line. He couldn't decide on being serious or not, but he sounded extremely straightforward, like a rapist. She wasn't bad looking, but he would literally have to rape her to get anywhere with her. Still, she was a better option than the bookworm.

"Please, let's not begin screwing each other until you get some protection at least.. you don't want to get pregnant or bear a kid at all now that your lord is dead.. it creates problems." Nick said, mostly unfazed by George's comment. He liked seeing human behavior.

"Now then" Nick began. "As we travel, I'm going to shift 'leadership' of our group around amongst you all to observe how each of you function as a team leader and in order for me to get a better understanding of humans." Nick seemed to think. "All right nurse, you'll be up first." He said, pointing to Judy. "Just describe a place you'd like to visit and I'll let us go there. I've been commissioned to basically go to as many towns as possible to set up connections to Dharma and to learn about towns history for the next edition of the almanac." He said. "So it doesn't matter to me where we head, as long as we go somewhere."

"Really? I get to choose? Hmm. . ." Judy stood a while in thought. "Well, so far we've encountered quite a few people that wanted to kill us. Is there some place where everyone's really nice and happy and non-agressive? Like a city of joy or something?"

Kiyoshi had come in to Mr. Cyrano's little office, curious to witness splicing. He stared curiously at George and Mr. Carter, "It reminds me of Asura...they look human and have more power than humans, but they're still not human." he looked worriedly at the spliced, an Asura wasn't something he wanted to be. Yes, though an Asura may be more powerful than he, he was still more pure. Pure as he was, he couldn't help but be curious about what splicing felt like and what all one could splice into.

Suddenly, something Nick said caught Kiyoshi's attention, something about babies, "Nick, what did you mean when you said that giving birth causes problems?" He gulped, the fate of his newborn now uncertain.

Nick addressed Kiyoshi's issue first, as he considered it the more important.

"Yes, it causes issues." Nick continued. "From the time your god died onward, all births on Earth will stop. All pregnant women will have miscarriages, and any new conceptions among humans will also end in miscarriages. No new souls can be generated without a lord governing your world. As such, a woman may get pregnant, but it will result in a miscarriage and another soul being added to the void."

    "What's that?" Desoto asked.

"The void is the place where all the souls have gone that were already dead when your god died. All souls that died before the other day, and all souls that were to be generated, now reside in a dimension known as the void. A type of storage dimension where souls from all dimensions are kept until they are sorted out by their lords. Your world's souls are there until your world gains a new lord who will decide to do with them what he or she will." Nick finished. "Why did you have a..." He flashed back and remembered that Kiyoshi did in fact have a child about to be born. "Oh.... I'm sorry." Nick gave his condolences to Kiyoshi.

"Oh, God. . ." Judy put her hands on Kiyoshi's shoulders, and her arms slipped around his neck into a hug. "I'm so sorry for you. . ." She looked over at Nick with an expression that said, "There had better be a city of happiness, because we're gonna need some stat."

Nick responded quickly. "r-right right." He pulled out a small booklet that he kept with him. "Hmmm. not sure about city of happiness, but there is a city dedicated to peace. D'abo, a type of business that sells peace bonds, and aids to help settle strife via mission work in foreign countries.. it sounds like the people there are good and charitable. We can go now." He said hurriedly, bringing the party into the next train to D'abo.

(control of D'abo citizens is Khan's job)

The train traveled through the night, Desoto watched his fellow humans and Nick as they slept. He sighed, wondering how this all could've happened. He then began to pen down notes about what they had experienced so far and about his teammates as the train continued through the night and arrived in D'abo in the morning.

Kiyoshi stood in place, stunned. All along he'd been telling himself that his family and friends were safe, but suddenly that had become a terrible lie. Out of everyone he cared about, his son was only second to his beloved wife, and now he was dead. A tear started to form in his eyes as Judy hugged him and he wrapped his arms around her in a very weak, brief hug before gently pushing her away. He walked a little ways away from the group and just stood their, shaking, a hand clutching his face.

    ----

"Fumiko..." Kiyoshi had spent the entire train ride alone, his head in his hands. All he could think about was his wife. He imagined how it must of felt to suddenly give birth to a corpse, and then, to add insult to injury, discover that Kiyoshi had died as well. An overwhelming feeling of guilt and irresponsibility rushed over him, he had widowed his wife and her newborn had died. She was alone and it was his fault, he'd failed as a husband. Tears trickled down Kiyoshi's cheeks as he became oblivious to the surrounding world, drowning deep in his guilt.

Before the party was allowed into the city, they had to go through a screening process. Only individuals with highly positive karma ratings were allowed to be permanent residents of D'abo, but ones with more moderate karmas (the party) could visit. People with very negative karmas were excluded.

After the group moved through the scanners they were greeted warmly, as if by a business with amazing customer service. "Welcome to D'abo. We hope you had a pleasant trip." called the receptionists in unison. One, a pixy, noticed Kiyoshi's depressed attitude and flew nearer. "Is something wrong, sir? Would you be interested in a grief counselor? We have some of the best in Necros." She looked sincerly concerned with his well-being.

Meanwhile, a voice read news over an intercom system to the crowds entering D'abo. ". . . And while law enforcement has been doing all they can concerning the recent gang activity, those responsible have yet to be identified. Any information regarding this matter should be reported to the enforcement office and would be greatly appreciated. Now we move to the weather. . ."

Judy looked confused. "Gang activity? I thought this was the city of peace. What gives?"

"Simple, *****. Take me for example. I'm itching to go on a crime spree here. It'd be too perfect. Scum is attracted to the most polished objects. Man, it'd be great to rob these Bible ****ers blind." George grinned at the thought of just breaking into one store after the next, only to hear the pacifists beg for peace. "Yeah, I'd totally enjoy that. I bet some like minded individuals are roaming about doing something like that. It's obvious lower negativity is allowed since I was let in. This city lacks serial killers, but some lowlifes can get in here and cause enough of a fuss to get these werewolves in a panic."

((I am aware that Necrotians aren't Christians. George is just ultra ignorant.))

"While I don't share George's enthusiasm...." Damien sighed after passing through the scanners. The guards had seemed to pay him the most attention, given that his karma rating was the lowest of the groups'. "It would be rather easy to make a fortune in this town. If one plays their cards right that is." There was only so much trouble Damien could get in to outside of his clinic. He certainly wasn't the strongest member in the group, hell the nurse was the only one he could take head on and even she'd be truoblesome. "Though I must confess I was expecting a town based on love and happiness to look a little more like the 70's...."

Kiyoshi stared at his feet, "I'm not the one who needs help now." he muttered, thoughts of his widowed wife still plaguing him.

However, he couldn't get the concerned pixie's face out of his mind, it was one of the only friendly faces he'd seen so far, and deep down, he knew that wallowing in guilt wasn't going to help anyone. He'd already failed his family, and he didn't need to burden his new friends anymore.

"Okay..." he sighed, "maybe counseling is for the best." He smiled as convincingly as he could at the pixie, "However, I'd like to bring along one of my friends for counseling as well." He motioned towards the teenage golem, George, "He seems bad but I think he just needs some support, maybe some time amongst a friendly community will help him and me. I think he may need some coaxing though." Kiyoshi looked worriedly at George, briefly forgetting his won guilt as concern took its place.

Desoto simply wandered about D'abo. He didn't care for counseling of any kind. In his opinion, the only counseling a man needed was a night of drinking. Instead, he sat down and just lazed.

Nick however, had a job to do. D'abo was one of the newer founded towns in Doppelekereft, and as such, he had to get two things from them. One, a connection to Dharma corporation. Second, he wanted a full history of the town. So Nick made his way towards the town leaders. As an official emissary from Dharma corporation, and a historian of Vulcan, this wasn't too hard for Nick to accomplish.

You can go cry all you want and talk about how your mother didn't love you and your papa never said, 'I love you,' but you ain't dragging me down with you. I chose this path for me own reasons. I'm not a product of a bad home or a ****ty society. I am just me, and I enjoy this current situation. Go **** yourself." George turned and left Kiyoshi. George had no clue what to do. Wonder what the drinking age of this place is.

The party, minus Kiyoshi, Desoto, and George, followed Nick, as they had nothing better to do. It was very easy to find the mayor's office, as the group was directed by helpful citizens of D'abo. They were allowed inside right away. The mayor, a large jackanape, smiled warmly at them. "Hello, how do you do? I'm Mayor Capensis. Would any of you like a piece of candy?" He held out a small bowl of brightly-colored sweets.

"Yes, thanks!" Judy said, grabbing a couple. She popped one into her mouth. "I'm Judy, by the way!"

"Very nice to meet you! I'm very glad to see earthlings visiting our lovely city." the mayor gestured to the tattoo on Judy's arm. "Now then, what exactly can I do for you?"

"Sir, I come as a double representative of both Dharma corp. and Vulcan. My aims here, likewise, are twofold." Nick said in a very business-like tone that was not at all like how he was outside of his job. "D'abo is a franchise that was formed rather recently, and as such, I am aware that the town has no central connection to Dharma corp. Due to this, I am here to solicit a basic connection to Dharma's services, which include access to the inner-wired and free terminals to connect as well. In addition, I come here from Vulcan as an author for the next volume of the Necrotian Almanac, seeking to learn the history of this franchise and what thoughts were put into its design." He paused for a moment before continuing. "Many people recently have been reluctant to join into a treaty with Dharma I'll admit, but I assure you, as an agent of the corporation, it is my job to render whatever services I may in order to procure your cooperation in our offer."

Mayor Capensis frowned slightly. "Well, getting you historical records shouldn't be a problem. And under normal circumstances, we'd jump at the chance to open up our business to more people." His ears twitched as he said 'jump.' "However, I feel the need to solve the current internal problems we have before creating any more kind of hassle." His slight frown deepened. "By now you must have heard of the gang activity? Quite frankly, we don't know what to do about it. The vandalism and such is being perpetrated by people of the city, which means we can't expel them very easily. We think they used karmatics to alter their karma enough to qualify for citizenship, then went about their evil ways. Anyway, it's quite a bother, and I really must fix this before D'abo's image is completely ruined."

"All right." Nick said as if sealing a deal. "We'll help out in your gang problems, we aren't citizens of D'abo so I believe we can fight in your city without hurting the image of this city of peace. In addition, this'll serve us at Dharma as being a company dedicated to the welfare of business in Doppelekereft." Nick said as he turned to the others, he gave a look that said he'd need some help. "Have you gotten any information on the racial identities or abilities of these gang members?"

"Oh, you're helping now? How. . . unexpected." The shrewd mayor's frown turned into a grin. "We don't have much. They're most likely races that could either have high karma or low karma, making them less suspicious. If a homunculi with a positive karma had tried to get in, we would have thought something was up. Also, the gangs aren't using magic to commit the crimes, so you won't be able to identify them by that. Other than that, we can point you to some of the more poorly enforced areas, but that's about it." Capensis rose from his chair and shook Nick's hand. "You sure have your work cut out for you. Good luck. I'll have the history documents when you come back, too."
