Solaras gets close enough under cover for the punk to hear him. If he can get to the police car, get in it, and use the megaphone he will do that. He looks for a weapon while he is in there. If not he will just yell. "Uh. Come out with your hands up! Let the girl go! We have the place surrounded!"

    AGATHA STREET
    MISSION: Stop the thugs
    TIME: Around Noon
    ENVIRONMENT: Sunny, Warm

LALA walks up to the hostage and asks her question. The hostage-taker's eyes bulge at her. "What the hell? Get out of here, kid!"

Even the hostage looks at LALA like she is some kind of bug-eyed alien.

Tom delivers a gut-busting kick to the thug that sends him crumpling to the ground. With that out of the way, Tom enters the dining room. There is nothing of interest in there, but the next room is the living room and he can see the hostage-taker standing at the window with the woman in his hands. He currently has his back to Tom.

Koto can't get the basement window open, so she blasts it open, then crawls in. Normally this window would be too small, but Koto is quite small and thin. She easily gets through and enters the basement. The room she is in is full of the kind of stuff you expect to find in a basement, mostly boxes with random junk in it, a hamper full of clothes, and a washing machine. The basement is unfinished and Koto can clearly see the stairs up to the ground floor.

Jericho runs over to the police car and jumps inside, but the hostage-taker spots spots the superhero and begins firing on him. None of the shots come close to hitting Jericho and he manages to get inside the police car without getting injured. Jericho doesn't find a megaphone, but he does find a stun gun, one of those pistols that require a code before they activate, and what appears to be a complicated looking controller for a remote controlled device.

LALA and Koto suddenly hear a loud "thump" noise from somewhere nearby. They have no idea what it is.

"Warning!" L.A.L.A. states firmly and loudly "Firing a gun in a public location such as a street produces a high risk of inflicting injury! Please cease fire immediately!" She has also noticed Tom sneaking up behind the hostage taker, but does not show it, instead happily providing new information: "Did you know there is a legal gun range within 6 miles of this location? If you wish, I can take you there so you may use your weapon in a safe environment."

Whether intentional or not, it should be a helpful distraction for Tom to sneak up on the hostage taker.

Koto curses herself silently for leaving her flash light behind, and makes her way to the stairs. She hopes they don't creak too much.

    * * * * * *

Koto slowly makes her way up the basement stairs while LALA provides a distraction for Tom. Unfortunately, the stairs do creak a bit, but nobody comes charging down the stairs to fill her with lead, so it can't be that loud.

Every step is a labour of love because Koto doesn't wish to make too much noise. She slowly lifts her foot, licks her lips, and carefully places it on the next step.

There is another loud "THUMP" noise, this one much louder than the previous one. Koto lifts her foot and blinks at the step for a second before realizing it couldn't be her.

LALA also hears the "thump" noise, as does Tom from within the house. Jericho and the hostage-taker appear to be the only people who haven't heard it yet.

"Let the girl go, buddy!" Jericho takes the stun gun and the controller, playing with its buttons until something happens. "This will go much smoother if you give yourself up! Don't be a coward, man!" He peaks up out the car window towards the house. "The place is surrounded! We can do this the easy way or the hard way!"

(I assume Koto is still concentrating on the siren noise)
    * * * * * *

*F**k you, hero!" The hostage-taker shouts back to Jericho. He fires a couple more times on the police car, but none of the shots are in danger of hurting Jericho. Jericho is pretty sure the guy hasn't confused him for a superhero, but is actually comparing Jericho to those people who tried to stop a crime but died in the process.

Jericho begins fiddling with the controller. He quickly realizes he needs to power it on before it can work (a SMART check), does so, then begins fiddling with the switches as a little red light comes on.

He suddenly hears what sounds like a banging noise coming from the trunk of the police car.

TIP OF THE PAGE: There is more to being a hero than just beating up the bad guys. Saving innocents and preventing collateral damage is extremely important in the eyes of other superheroes, especially the League. Some associations don't mind as long as you get the job done, but eventually someone is going to see you as a threat regardless of your "good deeds".

Being an Artificial Intelligence, there are many things L.A.L.A. finds difficult: proper social behavior, fashion sense, generating random numbers... But one thing she is very good at: counting things. In fact, L.A.L.A. counted everything she encountered.

For example, she had counted 1.253 steps taken since being delivered to Champion City, she had counted 23 car wrecks in the streets and she had counted 12 different people she had encountered so far: 5 armed citizens, 1 hostage, 2 police officers, 3 heroic citizens and 1 man with a ladder.

Most importantly though, she had also counted how many shots the hostage taker had fired. By the size and type of the gun, L.A.L.A. estimated how many bullets the thug had remaining. Most revolvers held between 5 and 8 rounds and most semi-automatic ones held between 7 and 20, she knew, and the thug had already fired several rounds twice. Chances were, there weren't that many left.

If the thug is out of bullets L.A.L.A. will immidiately approach. If he only has a few bullets left, she will move forward carefully - she reasoned that his first response would be to fire at her and waste the last few bullets he had remaining. Then she will be able to help Tom overpower the thug and save the hostage with little risk.

Of course, if there are still a lot of bullets left, then she will try to think up another plan.

"Come on, man! It's not worth it! The girl doesnt need to die. Why dont you let her go so that we can talk?" Jericho looks for the trunk release and opens the trunk. He also looks for a bulletproof vest and puts it on if he finds one. He keeps playing with the device for a minute and stops to pick up the gun. He tries to figure out how to get it to operate. He slips out of the car and moves towards the trunk.

(You guys didn't actually think beating up a few punks would earn you superhero status?)
    AGATHA STREET
    MISSION: Stop the thugs
    TIME: Around Noon
    ENVIRONMENT: Sunny, Warm

Tom takes advantage of all the distractions and rushes the hostage-taker. There is a loud creak in the floorboards as he moves (Stealth Failure on 1), causing the hostage-taker to spin around, but Tom is still much quicker and reaches the punk before he can fire. A whack to the face causes the hostage-taker to lose his hostage, who quickly runs into another room, followed by a crushing gut punch to bring the punk down.

The punk tries to shove the gun into Tom's leg before going down, but the quick ninja grabs the arm and twists, pulls the gun free, and KO's the punk with a final blow to the head.

Tom looks up and finds himself looking at a Japanese woman...

...and is surprised when a massive object smashes through the ceiling and the floor.

Just one second ago, Tom was securing the punk, but now he finds himself choking on dust and grit. Both Tom and Koto are floored by the sudden impact, and they're mentally floored again (Koto loses her concentration on the sirens) when they discover the object is a giant chunk of steel: girders and pipes form a square-shaped column of sorts. Running through the interior of the column is all sorts of machinery and wires.

LALA and Jericho watch an entirely different scene unfold: a metal behemoth suddenly appears from behind the house and glides over the ceiling. It looks like a giant spider, although it only has 6 legs, and one leg crashes through the ceiling of the little bungalow. Sitting atop the legs is something that looks a lot like a helicopter that has been gutted and chopped in half. It's loaded with machinery, and the helicopter blades are spinning.

Sitting within the cockpit of the helicopter portion is a funny looking man, with "crazy" hair, wearing a labcoat.

"Awww!" he says through an unseen voice amplification device. "Where are the police? I thought I heard sirens...oh, well! I'll tear up the place until they show up, ha! Did you hear that citizens? You will now bear witness to another great invention by Dr. Calamity! You should be honoured to live this historic event."

MISSION OBJECTIVES CHANGED: DEFEAT DR. CALAMITY

Jericho has only seen cars in musuems and has no idea how to open the trunk (SMART Failure on 1).

(if koto saw the hostage flee)

Pursue the hostage with the intent of getting her safely out of the house.

    (if she did not)

Koto will unleash sonic hell on the girder, looking for a weak point before regaining her footing. Then she makes for the closest exit (be that door or window)

"Warning!" L.A.L.A. announced loudly in the direction of the driver immediately as the behemoth stepped into the building "Your vehicle has been involved in a crash with a building. Please remain calm and disengage your engines. Do you require medical assistance?" she inquired.

Upon hearing the man's rant, she continued "Please power down your vehicle. It is causing a dangerous situation to yourself and others and is not street legal due to various safety violations, including a lack of visible license plate, the absence of tail lights and seat belts."

L.A.L.A. was full of useful advise, though so far she found that the human response to it so far was mediocre at best. She scheduled an analysis for the process to be completed at a later time: perhaps she needed to change her intonation.

Jericho pops his head out of the police car and slowly looks up at the mechanical beast. "Holy...." He quickly takes the gun and controller and puts it in his pocket. He backs away from the car and grabs his camcorder, pointing it up at the machine. "Ladies and gentlemen. I am face to machine with Dr. Calamity himself. This is not good. Awesome, but not good. Without my full abilities at my disposal I fear he will crush me with no effort. I am going to die on my first day in the 21st Century." He puts the camcorder back down still pointed at the action. He takes out the gun and tries his best to figure out how to activate it. If that doesnt work, he will fiddle with the controller to see what else will happen. His next option is attempting to start the police car and drive it into one of the creatures legs.

(Nope, the thugs screamed warm up. BTW, thanks for the cool combat moves for Tom.)

Tom will take the perps he knocked out, outside. If either shows signs of waking up, he'll knock them out again, they're still criminals. He'll put them on the pavement(Or if you must insist, sidewalk). He'll go back into the house and sweep it for anyone else whom might be trapped and then help them out. Once that's done, he'll then attempt to fight the Doctor. Tom will concentrate on the legs, especially the joints. He'll try to to disable the legs on one side. If Tom sees anyone else fighting the doctor, he'll call out to them to target the joints as well.

    AGATHA STREET
    MISSION: Defeat Dr. Calamity
    TIME: Around Noon

Koto DID see the hostage flee, so she goes after the young woman when she gets back on her feet. She finds the woman in the next room standing over a bloody and bruised young man. The woman is crying and trying to wake the man up, but Koto can see there is no cause for alarm. This must be the famous Jim, and he's still alive.

Koto offers to help get the two out of the house and finds herself propping Jim up with the help of the woman. They make for the front door.

Meanwhile, Tom picks up the hostage-taker and attempts to work his way around the huge steel leg. He manages to do so and tosses the thug out the back door. He then grabs the other thug and proceeds to drag his sorry butt away from the house. Tom changes his mind about taking the KO'ed thugs to the sidewalk when he hears a loud thud...

LALA shouts at the steel behemoth. Dr. Calamity looks down at her with a mix of shock and amusement.

"Where are your clothes? Is there something wrong with you?" Dr. Calamity cackles, sounding very much like the madman he is supposed to be. "Brave, aren't you? Good. I've got a use for you. Let's see how well the servos handle a little precision..."

The leg sticking out of the house suddenly rips itself free and rises into the air. The leg positions itself somewhere above LALA, then comes crashing down with a resounding thud. LALA finds herself buried about 2 ft. into the ground by the impact and now has a massive column of steel perched on her chest (Sorry, rolled a 3; -3 HP).

"Bullseye!" Dr. Calamity cackles again, but he stops when he realizes LALA hasn't been crushed like a grape. "Wait, what...? Why aren't you dead?"

Koto comes out with Jim and the hostage just in time to see LALA get hammered.

Jericho does his thing and figures out how to turn the stun gun on. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be a key or anything to activate the car, so Jericho has to ditch that plan (but really, his inexperience with modern day stuff is what's killing him here). He works on the mysterious controller some more and again something pounds on the trunk of the police car in response.

Tom begins looking around and realizes two of the behemoth's legs are behind him: one in Jim's backyard, and the other in another neighbour's yard. Tom can clearly see the exposed joint at the midway point of the nearest leg, it looks particularly vulnerable from his position, but it sits about 15 ft. above the ground. Tom will have to climb up the leg to reach it.

"Come on, this way," Koto says to the hostage and leads her and Jim away from carnage, between houses so as hopefully out of Dr. Calamity's vision. When she has them far enough away, she'll double back and attack a leg.

    Collision alert!

L.A.L.A.'s sensors warned her, but not in time to be able to respond to the threat. As she was crushed into the ground, L.A.L.A.'s internal sensors responded almost immediately, interrupting her regular reasoning processes to report the heavy damage she had taken:

Hull integrity compromised. Lower-left actuators at 20% capacity. Servos 143 to 151 disabled. Spinal structural supports damaged.

The constant interruptions by the damage reports coming in from by her internal sensors made it difficult to think. Her primary subroutines commanded her to wrap her body around her damaged components to prevent further damage, but L.A.L.A.'s higher functions overwrote them.

"You have performed an illegal operation and will be shut down!" L.A.L.A. informed the not-so-good doctor cheerfully... or maybe she was talking to the spider robot, it was difficult to tell.

Regardless, she grabbed on to the leg that had just buried her well up to her waist into the ground and started to climb it.

Though she would never hurt anyone, L.A.L.A.'s higher functions had concluded that this situation was a threat to the local human population - an clear and present threat, in fact, which took priority over damage prevention and the need for repairs.

Thus, she ignored the damage reports and status updates from her internal sensors, which mostly reported what she already knew - that her body was damaged and in need of repair - and formulated a plan: L.A.L.A. would look for a data access cable or electronics access port as she climbed the leg or otherwise find one when she reached the machine's cockpit. Since this was a complex machine, L.A.L.A. reasoned, it would have to have several to allow proper programming and control.

Once she had found an access point, L.A.L.A. would hook herself up with the spider-machine's systems and attempt to take over control. She reasoned she could then lock the doctor inside the machine's cockpit and take him to a police station where the local authorities would be able to deal with him in an appropriate manner. Furthermore, the spider-robot could then be used to clear the car wrecks that were littering the streets here, and solving two problems in one action was always a good idea, L.A.L.A. reasoned.
