Isn't this sort of. . . copyright infringement?

I doubt Square gave them permission nor the rights to do this to Chrono Trigger and when they said that it was going to be ported to the XBox and GameCube, isn't that even more copyright infringement? Well, since they said it would be for the official developers for those systems, i guess it's not AS bad but still, how are they doing this without Square sueing them for millions of dollars?

"only the PC version will be released to the public for free. The GameCube and Xbox ports are internal and only official developers (for those respective platforms) will be able to play them."

That mean we will only play the PC shareware version. I belive that they plan on taking this as an example of thier skills to get hired.

You can't look at how cool it is. The first thing you do is complain. 3D Chrono is sad.

Oh, I do think it's cool.

That's the reason why I'm worried. The makers of such a cool idea might end up getting arrested.

I am amazed. A fan-made remake of a game, where the graphics actually look like the things they're supposed to represent, and they even look BETTER than the source material. That, and the music is not just a MIDI downloaded from vgmusic.com! Incredible! I never thought I'd see the day.

This is either gonna be REALLY TIGHT...or REALLY WACK. Hopefully its the former. I was waiting for an official remake of CT by Square, but who knows if thats ever gonna happer. This might be as close as were gonna get.

The more I read about it the more I think people are going to be dissapointed with it, its only a demo with 10 sceens and about 1 hour of gameplay. Sure its good to see a fan project like this, but I feel a letdown of it only being a demo.

What's cool is it isn't a console RPG, it's for PC! And, probably should be in Game Development, but I'm just too tired to go down the list far enough.

I think it is incredibly awesome! I love the remade song of "Zeal Kingdom" with the piano and i love the 3D art as well. I just hope they will be able to pull this off without being killed financially because of Square wanting to sue or by being arrested forever in a jail where it will never get released.

If they do get hired by Square Enix, i will be so insanely surprised. On the Square website, they said they can't accept any outside games or any outside material for any game they produce. They said it has to be made within the company, so whether or not it gets made into a game, i highly doubt Square Enix will accept it as theirs.

But if this catches Square Enix's attention in any way, whether it be in the sueing manner or the hiring personel manner, they will realize how much people still want Chrono. So it will hopefully get them to finally make Chrono Break or just come up with an entirely new Chrono game!

I agree this is the coolest thing in the world and i hope the succeed! I can't wait for the demo to come out for us to play!

A chance to play Magus's Castle in 3D is enough. That and 9 more things is just plain great. Just as a movie it'd be great! Who wants to see a CGI Grand Dream? Or even better, Poyozo dance!

Great music, great art (see the concept Magus?), and soon great fan support.

These guys have some serious talent. They'll get hired somewhere for sure.

Can they get sued by Square eventhough they are not profiting from the project? I always thought that was a major condition of getting sued for copyright stuff, but I don't know much about it. It'd be sad if Square had a problem with it considering no one is profiting from it.

If a full version of this ever sees the light of day, I'll go ahead and cut my wang off. These fan projects never really get any real effort put into them as far as completion is concerned. It does look pretty cool however. As mentioned it's probably just going to act as a showcase of talents for the portfolios of some folks trying to break into the industry. I wouldn't waste my time getting excited about ever playing Chrono Trigger in 3D unless Square themselves announced a remake. Not that this doesn't look incredibly cool, especially for a fan effort.

Square isn't thinking about a re-make and i don't think they ever were after they put it on FF: Chronicles. So i'll say this. A Chrono Trigger re-make by fans who so far have shown amazing talent with the music and art is far better than having no re-make at all... unless the remake ends up being completely different than the original game and loses many aspects of it making it horrible compared to the original. However, these seem to be die-hard fans for Chrono Trigger, and judging by that fact alone, i believe that they will do anything in their power to make it as exact to the original Chrono Trigger as possible with new graphics, music, etc.

In case you didn't notice the "concept art" for Magus and Crono is straight out of the CGs in Chronicles more or less tounge.gif. It has the unique style of Akira Toriyama to it, as does the characer model of Chrono, also based off of said CGs I would guess.

I agree with you 100%, though it seems you missed my point that fan projects like this (and especially one so ambitious) usually end up never getting completed. If these people are actually doing this as fans for fans with the full intention of completing it, more power to them. But I honestly think that it'll never happen, and that getting excited over it is kind of pointless.

I don't really care, actually. Even if the case of Chrono Trigger is a bit special, I'm growing tired of remakes, prequels and whatnot. Give me the new stuff already.... and for once this year, give me something good.

Well, it's not like the thing is an actual remake anyway. They have zero intention of even trying to do the whole game, and say so on their boards. If they complete it, it will be a 10 area demo, and that's it.

If Squenix decides to crush it though, that will be the end of it. A lawsuit wouldn't be neccessary, just a letter. Lucasarts does it all the time. Right or wrong doesn't matter, the company would win automatically by right of having enough money to litigate.

Beyond that - it looks pretty cool. Their modelers are apparently pretty talented. And it's free, so I'll just follow that old cliche about beggars and choosers, and say cool.

i agree %100(except nothing good this year?how about la pucelle?).let the classics be.forget remakes, play the originals.this is cool to see from a fan standpoint, but come on,chrono trigger is better in it's original 2-d form.everything is 3-d nowadays,i prefer 2-d sprites anyday.

I actually LOVE the old sprites and i wish, if possible, that they do some of the old sprite reactions and such with the new games on PS2. When Chrono gets surprised and he throws his arms out and his entire body is moved to a surprised position is so fun to watch and i like it that the character not only have verbal reactions to the events of the game but also physical actions.

The new games like FFX-2, Xenosaga and of the sort do not really have those abrupt character reactions that make the situation that was meant to be funny go to hilarious. I think the best game that has done something close to the old sprite reactions is Kingdom Hearts, and they were only able to do things like that because it was associated with Disney. They could do those reactions in games but only that one, since it was with Disney, actually showed it. Anyway, back to my point.

In this "re-make" of Chrono Trigger, i don't know how they are going to make the reactions so that they resemble that of the sprites. It would be really really cool if they did it in 3D and kept that same sort of surprised look Crono, or Marle, or Lucca have on the 2D original. If they are able to create this 3D Chrono Trigger and retain everything from the 2D original, i'm pretty sure that this will definitely be loved by many many people!

Square looks at this place? CTR said that Square knew about them. Perhaps the press was too much? Luckly, I downloaded the MP3's and 4 screenshots.

What 10 scenes do you think there will be?

    1) Lavos
    2) Battle against Magus
    3) Walking around and learning magic at the end of time
    4) Undersea Palace
    5) The Faire
    6) Trial
    7) Something with Ayla
    8) Fixing Robo
    9) Cyrus or Hero's Medal
    10) Ozzie's Tower

    Chrono

Big honkin' pic there, so I linked it. What? I'm a month late? Yeah, I know laugh.gif -Martyr

I'm confused about why they'd get into trouble for doing what they're doing. Doesn't their site say that they are going to distribute it for free, not for profit?
How is this any different that, say, someone drawing their own CT fan art and posting it on their personal website? People don't get sued for that, do they?
  • PhatosePhatose Member Full Members

Just because people do it, doesn't mean it's legal. Most corporations won't go after fan art or fan fic. It's just too much hassle to go around suing your fans because they write gay porn involving Kirk and Spock.

That doesn't mean the companies couldn't do it though. You don't have to be profiting off their intellectual property as I understand it, but only potentially damaging the value of that property. Remaking CT, or even making a 10 scene remake demo, could easily fall under that heading - if someone is giving away free CT remakes, that very well could impact the demand for a potential CT remake by square-enix. Whether or not they have any intention of actual doing so doesn't matter much, only that they have the rights to the IP.

IP laws are all designed like that. You have not only the rights to the characters, but sole rights to any potential uses of those characters, and that potential value is protected whether you're making a remake or not. Most of the time people get by with fanfic and whatnot only because the content owners don't make the effort to stop them.

If the company did go around suing all of the fans that made a fanfic of fan art, they would also lose a lot of fans, not just because they're suing people and losing popularity, but also because a lot of people would find this a really stupid reason for suing others and many would start to hate the company.

It would also be really obnoxious to try to go around the entire internet to sue every single person who made a fan fic, fan art, put pics of the characters on their site without permission, put pics on sites without citing that they are copyrighted by Square Enix, etc. I'm pretty sure that doing this would take way too long for any company to even try and would create way too much of a hassle for the companies to really care. But i'd say that anyone who does have some sort of picture should cite the copyright, because if a company is low on money and has no other option, they always have the option of suing people on the internet.

As for this Chrono Project, does anyone know what happened to it? Was it shut down or something by Square? The link isn't working for me so i'm confused.

I've yet to become a graphics ****, but wow that screenshot is very impressive. Chrono looks even more like a DBZ character in 3D. The website doesn't load for me. I don't know the details behind the legality of this or if they have permission or if it's enough to get permission, but if it's not legal then it will most likely be shutdown. A few years ago some people started making a DBZ game called Bid for Power in the form of a Quake 3 mod. Atari shut them down posthaste. Unfortunately they probably did it because most of Atari's DBZ games suck badly and they know it. But back to the point this is indeed amazing.
