RPGCast - Episode 3: "No Mobile Gaming"

RPGamer's got the Halo 3 coverage you so desperately need...no of course we don't. Escape the Halo overload with our coverage of TGS. We go through all the interesting RPGs that were on the show floor with Paul Koehler, who was there on the scene to cover it all for us. Paul will discuss his thoughts of White Knight Story Final Fantasy IV DS, Tales of Innocence, and much more with Anna Marie Neufeld, Mikel Tidwell, Bryan Boulette, and Chris Privitere. Oh and don't worry, we still get in our weekly love fest for Persona 3.

A few things, would you kindly. Running Commentary.

    1. I'll never have P3! Never!

    2. 358/2 Days is the full 358 days of Roxas' life in Twilight Town and in the OXIII in the 2 days that Sora was in Castle Oblivion. Just so as you know. (This gets covered later, apparently.)

    3. FFIV rocks face. Don't front. Remake or not. FFIV = Pure Own

    4. Magic Pen is AWESOME.

    5. I don't like Torneko. I always always thought he was laaaaaaamesauce. Also, Too much Dragon Quest talk!

    6. Infinite Undiscovery sounds sooo goooood.

    7. Mega boo to Paws hating on Star Ocean. BOOOOOOO.

    8. Crisis Core. Awesome. Yes. Yes. Yes.

    9. Crystal Chronicles. Totally awesome. I've only played the single player game and it's actually awesome. Nice to hear that the multiplayer is good!

    10. My point one gets covered. Whoops.

    11. Sucks that security was so tight at the Closed Theater.

    12. The outtakes are awesome.

    Nice 'cast!

Persona 3 does have issues, it isn't perfect by a long shot. Progression in the game moves slow, and often you will be waiting hours for in game events to occur to move on in the never ending tower. The majority of a story is about as interesting as Laguna Beach. YAY Team Drama!

-It's funny to see the title of this one, because in the podcast we just recorded (though it is not posted yet), someone asks "How do you even play games like that on a cell phone?" and then I am quoted as saying "You know how you play cell phone games? You lower your standards."

-I thought TGS about met my expectations, but mostly because I don't generalyl expect a lot of "Megatons" from TGS anymore. No Atlus was a bummer though, I'll agree.

-Uematsu kicking it in FFIV again? Score.

Heh. I think it's worse than that. You have to basically not have standards.

Cell phone gaming is only playable by people who have only played Bejeweled.

How can you honestly play a cellphone game anyway? The screen is ubertiny. Gives me a headache even attempting it really. And that was for tetris. A magnifying glass doesn't come with it!

I think Japan must have some ridiculously overpriced video cell phones or something like that, because looking at the screens from the KH cellphone game and comparing it to the DS one, somehow the cell phone one actually looks better. I don't understand how that could be possible.

Which is so sad. I mean the screen on my phone. Its just. Wow.

    Here's the phone in question.

    Le Phone

the only difference is I don't have a cameraphone and the screen on the front isn't in color. The rest of the phone is exactly the same. The idea of playing a game on a screen like that is laughable. I could understand it in Japan where you say the screen is bigger. But in the states? Its just not as big a thing. Pity. I'd have liked to have played Before Crisis.

    Fact wrong.

North America was Taloon, Japan was Torneko, at least in the original DW IV.

Yeah, I just don't understand how it could be possible to pump out more graphical power through a cellphone than a DS. It just seems so very, very wrong to me.

At least the PSP KH still looks prettier :-\

Thats not the point. Actually the fun of it is from interacting with people and dating certain characters while waiting for a full moon. If you have played other MegaTen games I think progression is better than your typical Square Enix type RPG dungeon-story-dungeon-story progression. I find it quite innovative myself.

What I would have like to see in it myself is, some more events like when you max out a social link. Instead of just be like here is my key, keychain etc. Then they say, "Hey see you later have a nice life." You know and like some parties on the hoildays besides just a couple. I would also like some more dungeons (But really that is just a minor gripe.)

But I am sad there was no Atlus or Konami news at the TGS. Looking at the TGS news it was like looking at Mainstream G4s best games of the year award (you can know the GOTY already just pick the big 4 Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Zelda or some Mario game) or Mahamoud Ahmadinejad speech at Columbia Universty.

The screen on my phone (not a very advanced one) is less than three inches high and less than two inches wide, but I can see things on it just fine. The only problem (graphically) is the developers have a really limited resolution to work with. I've played some cellphone ports of games that were originally from other systems, and they just scale the graphics down, and it's pretty bleh.

A bigger problem with games on my phone is that there's a significant delay between pushing a button and something happening as a result of that button press. (It's actually like this with everything, not just games.) I don't know how common this problem is among other people's phones. But even though a lot of nice games can be run on my phone, this issue makes all of them except Bejeweled pretty lame.

My phone has Snake III, and the buttons are so lagged it's unplayable. Why did I need this fancy 3D Snake game that lags anyway? I would've been happy with a fast, responsive game made of monochrome boxes.

    1. Double-posting = posting twice in a row in a single thread.

    2. There is an edit button next to every one of your posts, provided for your convenience. The edit button feels hurt, betrayed, and ignored if you double-post.

    3. You weren't issued a banning, a warning, or even a cautionary PM in response to your double-post, because it's a minor offense. So kindly remove whatever is lodged in your posterior, take what you have learned from this experience, and move on.

    Proceed.
