The early morning sun beats down on the pathway, and the occasional high flying winged creature is spotted during the morning hike, but nothing confronts them. Lunch consists mainly of dried fruit and salt jerky, and a couple fish Gandt manages to catch. Unfortunately, the fish are rather tough and bony.
After lunch the group continues moving south. James gives a sudden shout and dives backwards as a winged, feral looking Gargoyle (3) suddenly dives down on him, but the split second reaction is enough to dodge the blow. A second Gargoyle (1)nearly crashes into the ground, giving James and opportunity to stab with his daggers (-7HP). A third then manages to catch James with one of his claws (-4HP) while a fourth Gargoyle (4) lands slashes at Skald with his claws, lightly scratching the ranger (-4HP).
INIT:
Gandt: 17
Lia: 15
Gargoyles: 15 (#1, -7HP)
Grove: 14
Kit: 12
James: 6, -4HP
NPCs: 2 (Skald: -4HP)
Map
(Water is 80 feet below the current level of the party, the two ledges next to the cliffs are 20 feet higher than the party, and the one next to Lia, Grove, and Amelia is 20 feet down. Each Square is 10ft.)
If he takes a lot of damage, he will Tumble towards Grove and use his bow.
(I like the map name of AmbushA, just in case we thought there would be only one.)
(what do we know about gargoyles? Everything? Knowledge check?)

Next round, if he's still not in melee range, see if there's room for a charge (Shield Slam).
Once he does so, he takes the first shot he can.
He will continue to barrage the gargoyle unless he or other party members drop below 50% health, in which case he will use his CLW wand.
Gandt Moves forward, and frees his lasso.
Lia moves forward and towards the cliff face before summoning a ball of fire into her hand.
The Gargoyles press their attack on James and Skald. Somehow all four miss.
Grove readies his crossbow and moves to where he has a clear shot at the Gargoyles.
Kit draws his weapons and moves forward.
James steps back to separate himself from the Gargoyles before stabbing at the one he stabbed earlier. The Gargoyle easily sidesteps.
Lirith charges forward to help James. Her sword bounces harmlessly off the Gargoyle's skin. Amelia moves forward as well, but doesn't engage. Skald steps back, and looses an arrow. The arrow bounces off just like Lirith's sword. Avner moves his horse back behind Gandt. Urol begins casting a spell. A hippogriff suddenly appears above the Gargoyles and gives a screech before diving to attack. It strikes hard, clawing across the back of the gargoyle attacking James (-8HP)
Round 2:
Gandt throws his rope to lasso one of the gargoyles (#4). He hits, and tightens the noose, causing the gargoyle to crash toward the ground. He gives a mighty jerk, and the gargoyle goes flying through the air, over Skald's head and lands at Gandt's feat. Amelia hacks at it with her sword, but can't penetrate the skin.
Lia throws a ball of fire at the gargoyle near James and Lirith. The ball of fire actually lands to the left of James.
Two of the Gargoyles (2,3) take to the air, soaring up and away from the party. The gargoyle attack James continues to press his attack, managing to land a single blow with a claw (-6HP), but falters when trying to take a bite out of the young half-drow. James buries his dagger deep into the shoulder of the Gargoyle (-8HP) in response. The entangled gargoyle struggles to free itself, but isn't quite capable of busting the silk rope.
Grove fires his cross bow at one of the flyers (#2), lodging a bolt deep into its leg (crit, -6HP, 2bleed (another -4HP, effectively)). Grove reloads.
Kit charges forward and attacks the downed gargoyle, easily running it through with his rapier (-16HP) and then striking it again (-7HP).
James slices his opponent lightly (-5HP)
Lirith attacks, but the blade again is deflected easily. Amelia and Skald find their attacks just as effective, while the Hippogriff continues to harass the gargoyle, it fails to hit as well. Urol casts another spell, and his arm flares up in fire like Lia's. He throws a ball of fire at the gargoyle Grove hit earlier, burning it lightly (-7HP). Avner and his horse continue to huddle against the wall.

Same healing tactic as mentioned in previous post.
Gandt pulps the gargoyle on the ground (+1 kill)
Lia moves forward and throws another fireball. This time her aim is a little better, and she cooks a gargoyle (+1 kill)
The two remaining gargoyles swoop down. The first one (#3) collides with Skald and grabs him, carrying him towards the ledge. The second one (#2) tries to grab Amelia, but instead tastes the steel of her blade. Even so, its only a light cut (-1HP)
Grove fires his crossbow at point blank range. And nearly hits Amelia. He quickly reloads.
Kit steps in to help Skald, but fails to hit the gargoyle (or anything else for that matter) with his rapier.
James lashes out at the gargoyle attacking Amelia, and cuts it deep (-8HP)
Skald tries to break free, and succeeds! Amelia continues hacking, and again her sword bounces off the gargoyle. Lirith suffers the same problem. Urol throws a fire ball at the gargoyle. The gargoyle is consumed by the fiery blast.
Round 4:
Gandt steps in to assist Kit and Skald. He smacks the gargoyle with his shield, but its not too impressive (-13HP).
Lia turns and whips a fireball at the remaining gargoyle. Her blast hits Gandt instead (-11HP) but at least Gandt doesn't catch fire.
The gargoyle takes to the sky in an attempt to withdraw, Kit stabs quickly with his Rapier, and while he does pierce the gargoyle's tough skin (-7HP) its not enough to stop him.
Grove fires his readied cross bow, but the bolt simply sails up and out into the sea.
Kit drops his rapier and draws a pair of arrows before firing them at the Gargoyle. Neither reach his target.
James carefully scans the cliff face for any other gargoyles about.
Urol tosses a ball of fire at the gargoyle, but it peters out before it reaches him.
Exp Earned:
Kit: 480, Lia and Gandt: 530, James and Grove: 560
Status:
Gandt: -11HP
James: -10HP
(The gargoyle escaped, heading southeast over the water.)

He uncoils his rope from the gargoyle, then dumps its remains off the cliff for no other reason than to watch it crash at the bottom.
"Does this path lead up to the cliff tops?" James asks Grove, he who simply shakes his head in the negative.
"It just cuts through a small portion," the cleric explains.
Dejected, James leans agains the wall. "I think we should stop here for the night, perhaps we can rig something to give us some protection from the rain."
(Any change in the watch order? Grove knows the cut through would take about 2 hours to traverse. He knows of no dangers in the area.)
She offers to take first watch as before. As for 'rigging up something', she knows little about that, she leaves it to the men to figure out. She talks with Tamaska and sees if he smells or hears anything unusual.

Tamaska doesn't smell or hear anything out of the ordinary. He complains about the damp weather making it hard to smell anything.
1. Help build a makeshift shelter from whatever is available, while setting up his tent for himself. ?
2. He also fills his waterskin with rainwater, urging everyone else to do the same. ?
3. He then sweeps the surrounding area with Detect Magic, looking for anything (or anyone) that doesn't belong. ?
4. Before the day is up, he'll convert his remaining spells to heal himself.
Before settling down, though, he approaches Avner. ?He gives him his dagger (probably the equivalent of a shortsword to him). ?"As of right now, we're not your personal escort anymore. ?It's time you learned how to fight." Gandt means to train him.
If he complains (which he undoubtedly will), "Look, I didn't have to save your high-and-mighty posterior back in the tomb. ?I could've... what if I protected Illyria instead? ?Then you would've taken her place in the ground." ?He pauses, letting that sink in. ?"Who knows if I'll come to your rescue next time? ?Then you'll only have yourself to rely on. ?Now quit your whining and hit me, yeh powder-faced princess!"
Just a short training session to start, though. No more than 10 minutes for now.

Following Gandt's example, Lirith gathers some of the containers the group is carrying and uses them to capture rain water.
Gandt scans the area with his magic senses, but detects nothing amiss.
While Gandt is busy doing this, Avner is busy trying to squeeze his horse in under the shelter. After a brief argument with James, he ties the horse to a gnarled tree near by, grumbling constantly. It's at this point that Gandt confronts the arrogant aristocrat.
Avner looks at the large dagger, then throws it down at Gandt's feet. "Listen you dolt, you're being paid to protect us. That wench knew the dangers when she signed on."
Strangely, James doesn't appear to be interested in intervening.
"Maybe we don't want to protect you anymore. Maybe we like our own hides better than yours. Did you ever consider that? I think you should learn how to defend yourself a bit, because if you don't, I'll throw you off this cliff right now. Come on you pompous windbag, defend yourself!"
Kit won't actually kill Avner, just scare him a bit. He'll give a nod to the rest of the group to make sure they understand what he's doing...hopefully.
Kit may not be proficient in unarmed combat, but I'll bet he's a boatload better than Avner at it.
Lia looks at James and notices he's not intervening, so she keeps herself busy scouting around the area. She stays clear of the area until the argument ceases.

Kit takes a swing at Avner, and manages to get sliced deeply across the face. (-5HP).
Before Kit can retaliate Amelia comes over, sword drawn. "Put your blade away," she snaps at Avner.
"I don't take orders from you, sea hag," he snaps back.
"Avner," Urol says calmly from his seated position under the tent. "We've all had a trying day, perhaps a cup of hot tea is in order?"
"You call that filth tea?" Avner roars, momentarily forgetting Gandt and Kit. "Sewer water would be more pleasant. Hell, I've ..."
Avner slumps to the ground as Lirith slams the hilt of her shortsword into the back of his head.
"I've been wanting to do that for weeks," she says with a smile. She then walks over to Kit and offers a small rag to help clean his cut. "We'd better get that tended to, or its going to scar," she says sweetly.
James sighs, walks out from the awning, and drags Avner underneath it. He says something to Urol, which must have pleased the gnome because he starts laughing before sitting back down to his teas.
* * * * *
Kit takes the rag. "Why couldn't he do that before? Say, we haven't talked much, have we?" Kit adopts his flirty pose.
He will seek healing from either Lia, Gandt, or Grove shortly after. He doesn't want a scar.
Kit suddenly has an idea. "Who would be interested in playing a little prank on our friend Avner?"
Lirith smiles a mischievious smile when Kit proposes a prank.
"Dangling him upside-down off a cliff for a few hours ought to do the trick," Gandt suggests, retrieving his dagger. (But I'm sure Kit has something more creative in mind. :) )
