Intending this thread for peeps who've seen it.

What did you guys think?

dances with wolves, furngully, mohicans, mononoke, samurai came to mind, but i thought it was a pretty solid sci fi flick.

regretting seeing it in 3d though, hurt my eyes. can't wait to get this puppy on blue ray.

imo, star trek was the better sci fi film this year, but still, to have had to great sci fi movies in one year is pretty awesome.

classic story, great effects, cool characters, i would recommend it to anyone.

Edit: We actually got about 4 great sci fi movies this year.

Avatar
Startrek
District 9
Moon

I haven't seen moon though, but rotten tomatoes has it at 89 percent. Will have to check it out.

Keep in mind: Spoilers. Don't say no one warned you.

    I saw it in 2D.

I need to see Princess Mononoke again. Or read a plot summary or something. It does remind me of FernGully. The logging machine is ripped straight from FernGully not to mention the environmentalism.

The mining company is a proxy (for oil companies maybe?). I think these types of companies produce resources everyone needs and some environmental damage is acceptable in order to get it. It's easier to hate the mining company in the movie because they are destroying sentient life. Is it a proxy for how indians are treated? There's no happy ending for the indians...except maybe for casinos.

Okay, but you neglected to mention any of the criticisms. Predictability: If you've seen FernGully, you know every plot point already. Dialogue: The action scenes don't have much dialogue. The non-action scene dialog is extremely cheesy. Cheesy dialogue is not a terrible thing for an action movie, but it's not great either.

Once you see the ending, think again about the scene in the science lab where he sees the avatar for the first time...

I didn't mind the dialogue or predictability.

Actually my wife pretty much spelled it out for me before we even went to see it, and she was dead on. "

Guy goes in to observe, falls in love with the new world, meets girl who happens to be the princess, her father dies, he saves the village after some conflict, marries the girl, most probably because cheif."

Those were her words and she was 100 percent correct, but anyone could have guessed that scenario from the previews. The movie has it's flaws but they don't prevent it from being entertaining, and I wasn't really doing a review or anything. Just popping in to say it was pretty good.

I saw it last night. I enjoyed it a lot. I thought the forest scenes were beautiful. I'm planning on going to see it again this weekend with my friend for her birthday.

Saw it, but didn't really enjoy it. The lackluster plot really bothered me.

Whoah there necromancer, read the forum rules biggrin.gif
"Back when FF9 was coming out. People were rejoicing because it was actually a fantasy game and not a sci-fi game like 7 and 8. It's hilarious in modern context, with everyone wanking themselves to dehydration at the thought of a FF7 remake."

Woah, I was wondering why people were talking about Avatar all of a sudden. Lockdown time.
