Your Opinion: How do you rank the main series Final Fantasy games

W-A-R-N-I-N-G: Discussion is welcome, but the moment a flame war begins I will lock this thread, pronto. Also, please use spoilers for newer games or major twists for more obscure games. Example: Aerith's fate is not a spoiler and hasn't been for almost a decade.

The rankings: From the Final Fantasies you have beaten/completely watched, please rank them in the following categories:

-Game Play (battles and character building/customization systems)
-Setting (the world/towns/NPCs, art style, musical score)
-Story (plot and major storyline characters)

I will update later with my list. For the two MMOs, please clarify which storylines you are including for Story.

I'm going to start with a top 5 in each category as I haven't touched the main series entries prior to VI (save III) in quite a while.

    Gameplay:
    1. XII
    2. X-2
    3. X
    4. IX
    5. VI

    Setting:
    1. XII
    2. IX
    3. VI
    4. VII
    5. X, X-2

    Story:
    1. IX
    2. XII
    3. VI
    4. VII
    5. X

XII, IX and VI (in that order) are my overall series favourites. I used to despise X but in retrospect it did a lot of things well.

Top 5 rule for me as well, but I'm not including FFT because it's unfair to the rest of the series due to me being biased towards its greatness.

    Gameplay:
    1. FFX-2
    2. FFV
    3. FFX
    4. FFVI
    5. FFIV

    2. FFII
    3. FFXII
    4. FFV
    5. FFIX

Yes, some of the most hated FF games (by opinion of a majority of the people I have talked to) are on this list, and for the reason that what the category they are in is what they did best with.

Hmmmm, this is going to take some thought, but here I go.

    Gameplay:
    1. FFX-2
    2. FFX
    3. FFVII
    4. FFVIII
    5. FFXI

    Setting:

    4. FFX
    5. FFVIII

I know it looks like I am being rough on FFIX, but its just those are the only FF I have played so far. Once I get more in, it will be higher in comparison, I am sure. You could remove my one spin-off and get the same list, as well.

Actually no, I didn't. As much as I despise FFII for its gameplay, the story department was where it was actually good, and GOD was it good...IMO.

I'll stick to doing a top three for each.

    Gameplay:

FFVII - The only JRPG where all the gameplay elements click for me.
FFXIII - Awesome battle system, fast progression.
FFIV - My favorite traditional one.

    Setting:

FFX - Spira is unique and tragic.
    FFXII - Impressive vistas.
FFVII - Lacks general credibility, but every location has a strong sense of atmosphere and identity.

    Story:

    FFVII - Surprise, surprise!
FFIV - The best example of a classic JRPG story
FFXII - A disjointed story made enjoyable by the best script in the series

    1. X-2
    2. IV
    3. IX
    4. VII
    5. X

This was about pure fun for battles and mini games for me, and in the end, even though the story was rubbish, I really enjoyed the battle system X-2 had.

    Setting:
    1. IX
    2. VI
    3. VII
    4. V
    5. FFF:Chocobo Tales

The world of 9 spoke to me, through it's visual, it's story (minus a big dose of emo from 8), and the music, THE MUSIC. So yeah, robably why it's my most favourite of the FF's. And yeah, FFF CT wasn't aa main number, but it did a LOT of things right!

    Story:
    1. IX
    2. VI
    3. VIII
    4. X
    5. VII

Again, I loved me some IX story, though from IV to X, the FF games have tended to have some sweet, if not always well executed, stories. XII wasn't bad per sei, but XIII... yeah...

overall top 5 (and BTW: X-2 is a bad fanservice spinoff and does not count)-

    Best Games:
    1. FF6
    2. FF7
    3. FF9
    4. FF4
    5. FF1
Honorable mentions: Final Fantasy XI Online, FF5, FF3

    Worst entries:
    1. FF2
    2. FF13
    3. FF12
    4. Final Fantasy 14 Online
    5. FF8

Cat's criteria to avoid or possibly...hopefully not to start a flamewar I rank things(as bad) on how I see gameplay: Anything with an AI auto-pilot option gets at the top on my bad games list(games should not play themselves...thank you) but FF2 beats those with the funky level-up system. If FF14 was finally fixed would totally get pulled off the bad list but from the last report it wasn't there yet. Also bad road trips also rank on my list of bad entries like FF10 and FF13...but since FF10 is not totally terrible it doesn't make the list at all.

Why yes, I do love Final Fantasy 10 :) I've played 12 and 3, but I've never completed them so I didn't rank them. If I did, 3 would be on the bottom of each list and 12 would rank low on gameplay and somewhere in the middle on story and setting. I haven't played 13, but I'm thinking about picking it up in the near future, and I've never played 11 or 14 and don't intend to.

    I'll stick to copying Spartakus.

    Gameplay:

FFXII - 12 is the most exploration friendly, I like being able to set AI gambits, and I like the license board. Has the most interesting equipment, too.
FFVIII - I know that drawing magic sucks but once you beat the game, you realize that you don't have to draw that much and if you want you can COMPLETELY replace battling with card playing. Awesome!
FFVII - Materia! I love making the combos.

    Setting:

FFVIII - Gotta be 8! Who DOESN'T want to be a Japanese schoolboy? Forget saving the world. That's MY final fantasy right there. Lots of the color blue is used too. I like blue.
FFVII - Junon, Gold Saucer, Midgar. Awesome looking places.
FFXII - Open world, baby! Open world.

    Story:

FFVI - The most "epic" story which contains ninjas, suicide, riding a train to the other side, paintings that come to life, humans doing espers, humans killing espers. 6 has it all.
FFVIII - A lot of people hate it because the main character acts like an actual annoying teenager, the sniper cracks under pressure and the hottest teacher gets fired. I say that's what makes 8 unique and interesting. Plus, it's got freaking Laguna!!!
FFVII - I just really like the personality problem that Cloud had. That was cool to me.

Is it ok if i just rank them? A game at the end of a day is an experience. The games i've ranked the highest are the ones whose story and setting i loved the most anyway.

    1. Final Fantasy IX
    2. Final Fantasy VIII
    3. Final Fantasy VII
    4. Final Fantasy VI
    5. Final Fantasy X
    6. Final Fantasy XII (forgettable in many ways but i loved the gameplay and played it for over 130 hours...)
    7. Final Fantasy IV
    8. Final Fantasy X-2
    9. Final Fantasy V
    10. Final Fantasy XIII

Yep, i think those are all the ones i've played. The order i played them in was:

VIII, IX, VII, VI, X, X-2, IV, V, XII, XIII

XIII is the only one that i would say is a bad game, or at least, not good.

I really want to rant against more modern games in the series because they each get interesting combinations of things right and wrong, especially XIII, but I'll spare you. Though I am glad that they are at least trying new things.

    Gameplay:

FFVII - (I prefer the classic ATB system and I liked the materia system, raising chocobos, getting all the enemy skills like chocobump, Playing all mini games, Racing with my chocobo, competing the arena, do sidequests to obtain rare items.)
FFVI - (Classic ATB, Powerful passive skills via accessories, Phantom Beasts Bonus as you level up. the whole system was broken and in a strange way that's why I like about it and I understand if someone don't like it for the same reason)
FFX- (The CTB and ability to change characters on the fly together and balancing it with the condition that enemies have specific weapon weaknesses. The sphere grid is good in concept but would be better if it was 1 different sphere per character so they didn't lose individuality.)
FFIX- (Learning skills from weapons what a nice touch)

    Setting:

FFVI- (Fully Steampunk to the max, The darker colors gives a gritty atmosphere, the sprites are very nicely animated and it's 1 of the best graphics on the SNES.)
FFXIII - (Fully Sci-fi and the characters look so good, Everything exept the grass looks good.)
FFVII - (Cyberpunk and it's unique to see that Midgar as a cluster city don't connect to other cities by roads as it's like Midgar is a city and a nation ruled by a Mega Corporation. The other towns around the world seem to be very underdeveloped compared to Midgar and they won't show much advancement.)
FFX- ( Post Apocalyptic and it shows how people would survive after a huge destruction of culture, It also shows the danger of being ruled by a full teocracy. It's a world where people depend on faith to survive.)

    Story:

FFVI - (Deceptions, determination, love and the most memorable villain ever to exist)
FFVII -(A initial confusing story, Alien contamination, science going wrong, prostitution rings, A evil and greedy corrupt corporation who oppress their clients and citizens and another memorable villain.)
FFX - ( A false belief rule the minds of the people, A summoner willing to sacrifice herself for the people of the world, Acceptance to the fact that you won't exist, a very annoying villain, love and romance.)
FFIV - ( The consequence of hatred, the consequence of not making your own decisions, a Summoner that's endangered of extinction (and heavily affected by rule 34), A pervert Ninja, a jealous friend who want your woman.)
Never buy a game published by D3 Publisher that is not WKCII. They cheated on their fans by releasing a game that they didn't support not even for a year and they released a rushed translation.

    Order i played them in originally was, 7, 6, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13

Personally ive always liked the good old ATB system. I wish they never changed past that. Of course creative and new quirks to it always welcome but not scrapign it for new trendy things.

Also I always opt for fantasy > steampunk > scifi
